    Hi,
Could someone please tell me roughly how much I can expect to have to pay for all of my books in first year, I should be starting Finance and Economics with a Minor in Geography in September. (Assuming I dont fail Irish)

    Thanks

The Geography books for first year come together in a pack thing, which cost 120 euro back when I was in first year (not sure of the price these days, sorry! I assume it's somewhat similar). They are useful to have, but you don't need to buy them first hand - there should be flyers around campus offering to sell them, there's the SU bookshop, and the sticky thread at the top of this forum for selling books. You could just get them or similar books out of the library either.

I don't know about books for Finance and Economics, but I'm sure someone else will know :)

Regarding second-hand books... don't be too quick to grab a load at your first opportunity. For a start, sometimes the lecturers change books year to year, or editions or even translations sometimes. I know a few people got stung getting their books too early. Secondly, there may be enough copies in the library. Thirdly, you might decide after a few classes that you can't stand the subject and want to try something else instead. You'll have three or four weeks, if I remember correctly, to finally make up your mind on subject choice.

Zero euro... seriously, I spent TONNES of money buying books in first year, using them once for doing an essay and once for making notes for my exams. I didn't buy any books in 2nd year and I bought one in third year after finishing the module because it was really interesting. All the books you need are in the library - and a lot of the time you don't need books, you can use journal articles as a much more up to date review of things.

OP: Stop, take a deep breath and enjoy your summer. All details about books will be given in September, and more likely than not you'll be able to get them online. Mainly the only times I've bought books for courses they have either been second hand on e-bay or amazon, or for modules I struggled at.
