    Hey all,
We're about to start a self-build in Tipperary, and the landowners have stipulated a boundary wall on the two open sides of the site.
The site is 75m by 40m and the wall is to be 4 ft high = 140.3m2

From what I tell from other posts here on boards, the cost per m2 is 80 euros.

So I reckon I'm looking at 11,200 euros.

Can anyone give an idea as to whether I'm way out (in either direction)?

this will depend on the type fo wall you go with or are required to go with:

Take a concrete block wall (prices approx, depends on location, part of country):

    Foundations excavation €450.00
Disposal (onsite I assume so no cost)
    Concrete 20m3@ €60 €1,200.00
    Concrete Pump / Labour €1,000.00
    Mesh €600.00
    Blocks (cavity blocks) €800.00
    Blocks Labour €1,100.00
    Mortar allowance €150.00
    Capping (s&f) €800.00
    EO for pillars €1,500.00
Plastered Finish to both sides €7,200.00
    Total €14,800 plus VAT

Thanks for the breakdown. No need to go into all that detail but greatly appreciate it. Given we're planning to put a hedge on the inside of the wall, and current planning laws mean we'll have no neighbours on the far side, we can get away without plastering the wall, hopefully saving us at least same percentage of the total cost you've indicated above.
Out of curiosity, where did you come up with the numbers? Are you a builder yourself, or have you done something similar of late?

kkelliher - this is very detailed

Questions - we have a requirment for 160M of boundary fence - the farmer next door wants at least a couple of rows of blocks - to stop weeds, brambles, spray or any issues in the future. What would you recommend as the cheapest - but most long lasting and robust make up?

Our thoughts were 3 rows of cavity blocks then with metal post every xMeters inserted into the blocks to hold stock proof wire. Holding them with cement/concerete. We would then also fill the other ccavitys and smooth over the wall with a cement capping.

The bushes etc will grow up to cover - but it will be a permanent marker of where the bounday is.

What would be your recommendation ?

Cheapest and long lasting dont generally go hand in hand. A blockwork stub wall with fencing about will outlast most othr types of wall but the fence may need replacement every so often. Most alternative economical options are directly installed to ground which does not seem to be what farmer wants.

160m of fence is approx 1044 blocks if you do three rows with a 10mm mortar joint. You said 3 rows but 2 should be sufficient as this will give you a 440mm height from the top of foundation (approx 350 blocks per row) (price is however based on 3 rows giving an overall height of 1.8 including for a 1.2m fence ontop of blockwork)

You will need to allow for a PVC pipe in the ground approx 500mm long every 1.2-2.4m for your posts (depends on best centres for the fence you want to use. You may get away with greater centrs for stock proof fencing but the shorter the centres the more secure the fence.)

Capping 160m ; i dont see any benifit to trying to fill the blocks; if you want to strengthen you can put block reinforcement in one of the rows of blocks but this again should not be required.

Costs would be as follows (again approx depending on where you are/local labour costs)

Excavation for foundation €510 allow 2 man days / mini digger
Disposal (again assume you can leave it onsite so no cost)
    Concrete found founds 29m3 €1740
Labour allowance €1000 concrete pump and 2 labour for one day
    mesh €720 s&f
    cavity blocks €630
    blockwork labour €835
    mortar allowance €150
    capping €510 s&f
    pvc pipe (at say 2.4 c/c) 34m €170
    concrete surrounds to pipe €240 68 number 300 x 300 x 500mm pockets
    labour €430 2 men 1 day
posts 68 number €1360 height allowed at 2.3m high (1.8 over gl)
    labour €430 2 men 1 day
Total €8725 plus VAT plus Fence installation

very approximate as no accout taken for ground conditions. Depending on where you are this price could easily go down. No reason for it to go up however!!!!

    Hi,

Myself & Partner are in the planning process at the mo, the site is adjacent to a railway line. At first Iarnrod Eireann objected but have now agreed that if planning is granted a boundary wall will be erected. The are is 70-72 mtrs long and the wall has to be 2.4 mtrs high. Just looking for a rough estimate. There will be no labour costs as himself is doing it all. One side of the wall will not be plastered etc. We intend of stone facing the pillars to match a bit of stone we intend to put on house. Just really wanting to know how much its going to set us back on materials etc. Thanks a mill!!

    Material cost only:

Wall 72m long x 2.4m high (assume 2.4m high from top of foundation to top of wall)

    Foundation Concrete 13m3 @ €60 €780.00
    Mesh for foundation 4 sheets @ €50 €200.00
Blocks 1710 number cavity blocks €1,539.00 (allow 90 cent per block cost)
Eo for pillar blocks (allow 15 Nr) €324.00
Mortar allowance €150.00 (1m3 of mortar premixed delivered)
    Wall Capping 72M @ €5/m €360.00
EO for pillar cappings 15Nr €450.00
Plastering Sand Cement to one side €610.00 (materials only)
Total €4,413 plus VAT plus stone

Stone to pillars will depend on the stone but you need approx 15m2 of stone to clad the front and returns of 15 pillars.

Again this is an estimate excludes labour and is not based on any specific area. you may be able to save or spen more depending on local supply costs
