Bren carrier. Find me something more useful for an airsoft game than an old Bren carrier or one of it's derivatives. You won't.

I've been in an Fv432 in game many times at my old site. it was used to deliver players around with a mounted m249... Been in WIMIKs, WOLF landies in game, wimiks with mounted m2s of course :P A bell 206 chopper that delivered us into a game, an american Duce and a half truck at a nam game.... And at the first site I played at, we had old scrap cars we drove around.

Best craic was in a brit forces vs insurgents game, me and 3 others rode around in a clapped out metro, rammed a british checkpoint (boy did they dive fast) and did drivebys with our pistols playing ****ty hiphop on the stereo while imitating bad nigerian accents (african themed game)
I won't mention how the site owner dealt with that... lets just say the car ended up in a game of chicken with a 432, we lost, it ended up flat. (you can runf ast when you need to, and metros stall easily)

Must say, they add a dynamic to the games, and make things very interesting...

What I'd love to use or be in... Possibly jumping into a game from a c130 or similar... or doing an amphib assault in a seal boat... not sure. Something dynamic... riding around in trucks, jeeps and armour is a bit meh.

    Probably jumping in.

    Land Rovers, pickups, trucks.

The most used vehicles in any army and the most useful for airsoft.

    that wud be class!!!

some kind of armoured personnel carrier like a bradley or mowag, the rush you must get when that ramp goes down and everyone piles out, never experienced it.

I'v done mounting dismounting helis with the reserve its gud craic but you gotta realise that generally you don't diemount from a heli into a hot LZ... only out, dismounting a heli into a stealth role though would be interesting

Oh well, if we're going to be ridiculous and spare no expense, I choose fast-roping or, as you said, jumping.

Honestly, these days I'd settle for a day off and a '91 Corolla to actually get to a site.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,205 ✭✭✭Firekitten

No, going out of the back of armour in airsoft sucks, because the benny hill effect occurs, and the enemy follow it and hose everyone down as they get out :P

Riding on TOP of armour however for an assault was gas... 8 inside, 8 on top :D And a driver determined to throw us off...

As for helis... yeah, but you train for hot too, especially now and for us. We deffinately trained for hot HLZs, as casevac often happens in them. Did some training in chinooks and getting in and out very fast... Best one was in a merlin we'd 'borrowed'
jockey took it in in a low 'combat run' and came into a hover at our designated hlz to pick up simulated casualties... only, the grass was rather tall. So tall when we went off the ramp, we dropped about a meter... everyone on thier face, with the loadie laughing his hole off... Not funny :P

My memory may be going wonky, Wasn't the Chieftain Tank used during the filming the Film "Reign of Fire" in Wicklow privately owned by someone in Ireland that also used it on a skirmish site ? (Maybe it was a paintball venue)

That would be nice to see! (but probably a nightmare for Insurance)

thats sounds like fun, when i did the dismount from the chopper he landed, but for one or two groups he hovered a few feet off the ground and they had to jump, it was hilarious! the slowest dismount from a chopper i'd ever seen! they were just looking around and didn't want to get off so the loadie started shoving them out the door! Wud love to go do that again!!!

I want to be ambitious abseiling from a Chinook hovering at 1000 metres onto a boat where you parasail into a base where you are brought into "the war zone" in a tank with a mounted LMG for every passenger
    I think it could happen.......

I don't want to ever ride in a supacat jackal... youre so exposed to fire, either real or airsoft... sod that... atleast a wimik has a nice big engine block infront of you and a windscreen to deflect rounds....

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 1,712 Mod ✭✭✭✭otmmyboy2

True, a wimik does have more passive protection, ie engine block etc, but a jackal has a lot more offensive protection, ie 2 gpmgs and a central m2/gmg versus a wimiks gmg and gpmg. That and also, while not relevant in airsoft ofc if your in a wimik and hit an ied then your done, in a jackal youve got a chance at least. Having been in both theres a much greater sense of security in a jackal.
    Just my opinion ofc.:)

IEDs do form a massive risk, but small arms fire is a killer thats far more likely... plus, the jackals are more used for long range reccee patrols, off road, where ieds are less of a factor.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 1,712 Mod ✭✭✭✭otmmyboy2

True and they are basically taking over long range recce from the now relatively dated wimik fleet in that regard. Ah sure each to their own.:)
And ideally id rather be in either a challenger or a harrier in a warzone thx but neither of those is exactly practical for airsoft, well maybe if the challengers main gun was converted to fire nerf rockets......:D

Airsoft vehicles ... my favorite theme ...
So, cut the crap, no AC130, no Chinook and forget about Abrams.
But there is still countless options around, some of them even with price tag small enough to be affordable for team or even individuals.

There is a couple of categories:

    Off-game vehicles / on-game vehicles
    Gunship / transport / utility
    Airsoft only / universal

    Lets check each of them:

Off-game vehicles - there is nothing more cool than team of 5-8 jump out from camo painted Ford Transport, taking from rack in back of car their equipment as bunch of pros SWATs. Price is, surprisingly low, some 10+yrs. good looking van can be for sale for 500€, camo paint is matter of a few spray cans and insurance and road tax can be spread by team.
Much worse scenario is five guys fall out from pink Ford Ka, while they "****" is stuck behind back seats as dirty laundry.
On-game vehicles - thats whole set of cars, from inexpensive one, to pretty dear, custom made beast. Point of these is, that you can shoot from them and don´t bother when is shoot at.
Transport - lets start with these one. You can use practically any kind of vehicle depending on scenario, as OPFORCE there is no problem drive on the field some old sedan with suspension good enough handle rough terrain. Price variety, but basically 300€ can be good enough (and after season, two, you can buy new(ish) one). ... and you can use this car everyday (if you don´t mind some small bb damage). Worst situation is when you play as "good guys", because even as a transport there is certain demand. You can choose from some pick-up trucks (ISUZU from 1500€, L200 from 3500€ or Hilux from 8000€), where is capacity up to 10 peoples, or Land Rovers, when is short 90 for up to 8, or 110 for 10 crew or 130, where is space for 12 peoples easy (and price tag can be from 1000€ to 10k, depend of age, rust and variant (rag roof can be cheaper, less useful for everyday riding, but for airsoft better).
Ultimate solution is some ex-army half truck. But its pricey in any way (ask Conman ;-) ).
Utility - this category is divided to two: HQ vehicles and quads. Same as off-game transport, you can buy some van and rebuilt it as a command post, you need just camo spray, camo net, table inside, folding chairs, metal board, magnets and map or area. Cheap version. More expensive one is with PC in it, CB/PMR radios (and antennas on roof), batteries or power generator ... its up to you fantasy and thickness of your valet.
Quads no need comments, they are fun, they are little bit expensive and there is just a few sites where you allowed to use them (in Europe).
Gunship - and now we are coming to kingdom of home building. As a gunship can be used any vehicle without a roof (or part roofed), some jeep (wrangler), truck (as transports above), or totally home made (see airsoft-only category below). Main difference is gun mount, M2 (almost impossible/expensive - there is only one company in the world doing airsoft M2 and its plastic body, so if you want it, DIY), M240 (Echo 1 have this beauty for cca 800U$D), or M249 (plenty, from A&K 280€ to CA 450€), witch is little bit "short" and look better on small cars as wrangler, than long vehicles as hilux, where m240 or m2 look cool. Gun mount isn´t complicated, it just a pipe with 360 turning mechanism and elevation mount for gun, unfortunately there is no company doing it, so DIY. Worst are weapons arm for passenger, but if you are capable of welding and have access to material, its one day job. A few year back I witnessed great stuff: instead of back doors of Mazda BT50, mounted on door hinges, was V arm with M60. Spare doors was chained to some tree back in safe zone and mounted back after game, awesome. Condition is: no electric windows, no central lock.
Airsoft-only - if perfectly pimped Hilux isn't good enough for you, if you are loaded and if you have garage or big shed with plenty of tools, there is special place (in hell ;) ) for you. You can build your own in-game vehicle. Conditions are: you can put it on trailer and its allowed for game (don´t forget, some games are using, at least partially, public roads and you can be in trouble with that), after that, you wild fantasy is welcome. As "basic" can be considered rebuild of some existing vehicle, make it look as lookalike. Little bit more complicated is sand-buggy and top of class is full army like replica. I can´t tell you prices, because even crazy fool as I am, I´m too soft to try build something like it. But there is a couple of pretty nice projects around, just use your google-do, or just browse some army pages for inspiration.

One category I didn´t mentioned: Reenactment and rentals. First is mostly for display only and I don´t know guys who will let, just for fun, bunch of airsofters shoot on their seventy or so years old originals. Exceptions are welcomed, as maniacs with APC´s where bb cant do any real damage (but its pricey, fuel consumption is OK only if your name is Exxon BP Shell). Same is with "bledners", not so many helicopter owners are willing take risk of damaging they pretty expensive machines, kudos for these few who are (but you will pay for it also).

As you see, you don´t need to have unrealistic dreams about airsoft transportation, there is many options, only one thing is necessary for it: your will.

Whats wrong with pink ford Kas? :D

    Interesting list... a few addons...

Some sites in the UK do use actual armoured vehicles, or wimiks, or snatches etc... They are very cheap to get, and use for airsoft purposes tbh. Not much worse than your 'gunship' idea.

Real chopper use... the games I flew in one for, it was a 'scene' thing. you were delivered and extracted 'out of game' while 'in game' so no shooting took place around the aircraft. Frankly, shooting near one would be a massive hazard... you think a bb is insignificant, but it can have a similar effect to sleet or ice going into a turbine... Ends in surging, and booming, and unplesantness. No idiot would allow fire around a running bird, or even a secured one.

Tbh, if i saw 5 guys rock up in a camo painted van, with thier guns in a pretty rack in the back, I'd think they were a bunch of tools with an ego problem... This is airsoft, not WWE...

    bg1.jpg

I found out about them from these guys who build military training sites. Remember them for when you have won the euromillions...

4 Firekitten: Nothings wrong with Ka, friend of mine have it, but she is 5ft1 pediatric. Hard to imagine use for it with my 6ft7, three guns, vest and spare camo ... and at least two buddys with same body size and same equipment ;)
About "site vehicles", my post was about players stuff, if site is big enough, rich enough, then there is many other options, as You added. Agree and like it too. Shame that there is not enough of them ...
I know, that shooting around chopper is forbidden, but still, its a risk, so I´m grateful for these chaps, who are wiling take it.
I know a few guys, who have cars like this, some of them have ego as Duke Nukem, but some of them are one of these guys, who take airsoft as part of they life really seriously and as a enemy or co-players, they are real treasure.

4 sliabh: oh yeah, Jakub, my dear and beloved (hated) Jakub ... its in army training center Vyskov, Czech Republic. Lot of fun with that, but I´m not quite sure if it´s propriety "toy" for airsoft. Its used for drill purposes, something like monkey trail on steroids, there is not so many scenarios where to use it (but, I can tell You its totally great sim, make You sick after a few minutes ;) )

i remember you working on a vehicle for last years berget, is it still a current project? vehicles are a great additon to a site and games theres a few recent examples of vehicles in use in the latest operation lionclaws videos on youtube

extra mobility and firepower help in game, i have seen some dunebuggy / trikes used by dutch players for recon and support they look fantastic and are quite fast too!

there was a team in sweden with a converted pick up the best feature was a barrett sniper rifle strapped to the side as a backup (reminded me of that scene in the hurtlocker :D) it looked badass.

Yes, that project is still going, now I´m searching for plastic canopy for L200, bull bar and working on M2 machine gun. If anything go smoothly for next year Berget there be fully equipped battle ready car ...
And If there will be even more luck, my buddy will have done his own project: Defender 110 as a crew/medic transport with unmanned turret on roof. Total troops count for these two will be 9+8 and price to go to Berget per person (included flights) around 450€.
We both can tow, so no problem have buggy/quad behind a car on trailer and enjoy it on Berget or everywhere else ...
