nikon D5100 - where's the trim/crop function gone?

    Hi,
I just bought the new nikon d5100 as an upgrade from my very decent Nikon D40.
When I took a photo on the D40 I could click on the Trim option in playback (in camera editing) and it used to let me crop in on the photo until it was cropped how I liked it. Then I'd click save and that'd be that.

When I click on Trim on the new 5100, it doesn't actually let me see how the image cropped is going to look, it just zooms in a yellow square.

Is there any way of getting the old D40 way of trimming back ? It's the function I use all of the time (I take photos of birds and crop a lot).
    Thanks for any advice.

one thing i'd wonder is whether you are trying to crop RAW images? it might not allow that...

    nope - jpegs

I think the old cropping is just that - OLD and done with.
Huge shame cos it was great the way you could visually see in the screen how the photo would end up in crop before saving.
Now you've got to guess how it's going to look before you save.

Some 'improvements' are not improvements :(

it's not a feature i've ever used - would you use it to crop down when your lens wasn't long enough?

I've a 500m lens, but even with that, birds are small and need to be cropped in.
So to answer your question, I suppose I'd be cropping in closer on the image.. as though I don't have a long enough lens..
it's something you can do in camera on the d5100, it's just done in a less helpful way than on the d40.

Crop on your computer after the fact? Also allows you more leeway for straightening if you wait?
