Bridesmaid question!

Hi everyone-my sister is getting married this July (not long to go!!) and because we have a very small family and not alot of 1st cousins, I'm the only bridesmaid. My question is this-Should I offer to split the cost of everything with my sister? I mean the dress, the make up,etc... and what present would be suitable to get her? Do people still do the 'old, new, borrowed and blue' thing!?

I'm a final year college student and don't have a part time job for the summer so I'm not exactly minted. But what kind of present, cost wise, should I be expected to give my sister and/or brother in law to be? I have no idea!!

well, the question of splitting the costs would be between yerself and herself really - there's no right or wrong here - has she mentioned anything regarding the cost up to now?

i was in your position when my older sister got married and i was her bridesmaid - in college and skint - so i offered to help with the invitations - i was studying fine art at the time and did some drawings of the church that she used on the front of the invitations/orders of service and they both loved it. personal touches like that should mean more between sisters than anything monetary!

You were asked to be the bridesmaid because you're who she wanted there, so don't worry too much about financial contributions.

My maid of honour at my wedding last year was my sister, who was flat broke. She didn't get us any gift, but she sang a song in the church. Likewise, my brother in law didn't have any money, but put blood sweat and tears into helping us design our wedding invitations, church programmes, menus etc! They were both indispensible help for our day, and the most precious gifts to us. So offering your time or skills is the perfect way to help if money is tight. Good luck!

Agree with the replies here, my sis is unemployed with 2 kids, don't expect anything monetrywise from her.

Offer to organise things for her like the hen, the hair and make up trials, dress fitting appointments, church music, type up mass booklets, help with invitations, rsvps, table plans.... These are things that stress brides out so any relief at all from these would be priceless IMO...
