    Howdy,

I am thinking of getting a media player to hook up to my Samsung 40" TV but I have no clue what brands to look at (or avoid) or what i should be looking for in the description.

Do they all play multiple formats (avi's mp4's etc) Will they all hook up to the TV via HDMI cable. Are they easy to use ?

Any help or advice would be most gratefully received.

    Mark.

most play all formats, nearly all use hdmi now, do you want an out of the box solution, are you comfortable messing around with software on it, do you want to store the media on it, or do you want to stream across your network?

    Hi MossyM,

I want to be able to hook up an external HD I have to it and have the media player hooked up to the TV via hdmi and just play movies direct on to the TV from the Ext HD.

The less hassle the better but I want a high quality picture and sound.

I already have a toshiba 250gig Externale HD but I would not be averse to getting a media player with a HD combined (depending on the price).

to work with your current drive, and and allow you some expandability, the WD TV Live generally gets good revews. not sure how it fits in your budget though
