Seen this advertised on the hordings when watching the Ireland V N Ireland game last week. A tournament including an Airtricity XI, Inter Milan, Celtic, and Manchester City, taking place over two days at Lansdowne Rd at the end of July

What do people think, one point I cant really understand is how they can call it a tournament when not all the teams are going to be playing each other, ie, no Airtricity XI v Milan, or City v Celtic. Now I understand, what with fixtures both here and in the off season in europe, it would be difficult to spread the games out, and 3 games in three days for a team is also not pratical. But its just a little disapointing that not all the teams will get to play each other. Putting that aside it will be hopefully nice to see a full Lansdowne Rd following the recent Nations Cup.

Hopefully it will bring a few more supporters to the League here, and that people dont forget about it as soon as they have seen the traveling teams.

The idea of an league 11 was proven a failure last year.

Was that the game against Man Utd? Suppose it did mainly attract Man U supporters more so. Anyone know of the number of actual LOI supporters in attendence?

Most LOI fans were indifferent at best and completely against it at worst.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

In reality I suppose its just a money spinner for the FAI and preseason training for the overseas side.

Of course thats all it is but some fans genuinely want to see some of the times play.

I'd love to see the inter games but wont be around.

It's an opportunity to help pay for the Aviva, little more than that.

Hope it is successful and all that go to see the games will enjoy it.

Well I dont know what the seating arrangments for it were. Was there a section for the Utd fans, and one for the LOI XI (assuming they were actully LOI followers) like most other football matches, or was it all just general sale?

Do you actually like football? Do you go to games?

Yes I do, to both questions. Whats that got todo with me wondering what the attendance was of LOI fans or the ratio between them and Man U fans at the match.

I dont know what the seating arrangments were for that game or how the tickets were allocated. I would assume it was the usual segregation of fans, but considering one of the sides was a select team for one night only, and it was pretty much an exhibition/money spinner it might have been differnet. Thats way I asked the question.

Good man, I ask purely because you seem to have a lack of knowledge about it.

Are you drawing that conclusion because I'm not aware of the seating and ticket allocation for a one of match. I dont know if MUFC sold tickets to their fans and the FAI sold to their fans seperatly, or if the FAI sold all the tickets regardless of the side you were supporting.

Anyway, I didn't start this thread to defend or discuss my football knowledge, I dont pretend nor admit to be the knowledgable on the subject, I know what I know on it.

I started this thread to discuss or get peoples thoughts on the upcoming tournament, its format, and if it would be of any use to promoting the league here.

Given that this has gone off on a tangent of two blokes arguing bout football, (which is unusual in this forum:rolleyes:)....I'll answer...

At the Aviva for the Man U match there were a few thousand LOI fans - having said that, some were possibly wearing their Man U jerseys so it was hard to tell. There wasn't a designated section for the 'Airtricity' fans - and the full house cheered like mad men & women when Airtricity scored! So it was hard to tell......there was little (if any) rivalry on the day...off the top of my head, I'd say there were a few thousand LOI fans there....
Even the scarves sold on the day were halfo-halfo /we've a great scarf, half Airtricity X1 and half Man U:)

I think the upcoming tournament is a good thing - but then I thought the Carling Nations Cup was a great thing, so what would I know;) Tickets are a bit pricey however, which is the norm for the Aviva. Hope that answers your question!

You should ask the mods about getting your wishes written exclusively into the charter so we can all abide by them.

    Done.

A hastily put together LOI XI getting tonked twice won't attract people to the league, I think that's a given.

Unless the ticket pricing is reconsidered fairly lively, there'll be many empty seats.

The concept of an "Airtricity XI" inspires few (and convinces even fewer - after last years 7-1 debacle, Alex Ferguson referred to "the quality of the Ireland goal" in post match interviews) and while no doubt The Celtic kit wearers out there will spring for a few tickets, your average Irish football fan will simply throw a glance at the highlights when they're in the pub later that night.

In my own opinion, it has all the Kudos of one of those Far east "fun and frolics wind-down" tours that English Prem league teams take every now and then, where they send 20% of the 1st team sprinkled into a team of trainees, soon-to-be-retirees and toddlers to represent the club against the Singapore national XI, and send the New keeper they've signed out to play up front for the last 10 minutes for the laugh because they're winning 8 nowt.

Not really interested, you can probably tell.

There definitely will not be any Sligo Rovers players taking part as their Europa League qualifying 2nd leg takes place four days later

There definitely will not be any Galway United players taking part either.

    For entirely different reasons though.
