Going to Liverpool

Marina day is almost upon me.

I'll be heading over to Liverpool on Saturday to collect my Morris Marina on Saturday and I'm just wondering what part of the registration document I'll need to bring back. I assume the seller won't let me take the entire V5.

Is there anything else I need. Once back I'll put a big write up about it and put up pictures of the final car :)

You MUST get the ENTIRE V5 except for the little bit or section at the end of the V5 which the seller fills in and sends off to Swansea (DVLA) to declare the car as being exported.

If you don't get the V5 then you will have to apply for it when you get home and that will take a few weeks.
Receipt with a date on it and Ferry ticket for VRT

in fact you should get the WHOLE doucment including the export bit as that bit is for use when the SELLER exports it.
If it were me I would print off the bit from the DVLA website where it says the seller should give you the whole V5C ((and that he should WRITE to the DVLA to tell them he has done so) just in case the seller doesnt believe you.

One of the guys in my car club recently brought a car in from the UK & this is what he needed when he went to the NCT centre:

ID as in Licence or Passport
Document showing your PPS no and home address
A utility bill with your name and home address showing.
    The vehicles V5 cert
    Purchase invoice
Proof as to when the vehicle was imported I.E boat ticket.

    Hope this helps

    Dave

As above, GET THE WHOLE DOCUMENT. Tell the seller this now, so if they're unsure, the can confirm the procedures, rather than getting into a bind on the day.

INS160 Registration Certificate Guidance Notes - PDF Document (869 Kb) Information and Instructions on the new registration certificate, V5C

Current advice from the DVLA is on Page 8 of the above leaflet:
What to do if you are selling your vehicle privately to someone that does not have a GB address
You should fill in sections 6 and 10 with the new keeper’s name and address. Both you and the new keeper (buyer) must sign and date the declaration in section 8. Give the whole V5C to the new keeper to aid registration abroad.
You should then send a signed letter to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1AG giving the vehicle’s registration number, the make and model of the vehicle, the date of sale or transfer, and the name and address of the new keeper.
Once we know about the change of keeper, you should receive an acknowledgement letter to confirm that you are no longer responsible for the vehicle. If you do not receive the letter within 4 weeks, please phone 0300 790 6802. If you are deaf or hard of hearing and have access to a textphone, phone 0300 123 1279 (this number will not respond to ordinary phones).

In short: You get the whole V5C, seller writes a letter to DVLA.

Advice on buying (including the serial numbers of old dodgy V5Cs): Direct.gov.uk

DO NOT BUY A VEHICLE WITHOUT A V5C!(first rule of buying a car in the UK) You cannot apply for a V5C using a non-GB address, you can only apply for a Certificate of Export. The delay will also mess up the 7/30 day time limits for registration.

Be aware also that a "registered keeper" can be, but isn't necessarily the legal owner.

Do NOT come home without the WHOLE V5

Now that we've that out of the way........

To make sure you don't run into an impasse on teh subject when you get there - tell the seller NOW that you WILL be requiring the whole V5. If he gets wobbly, it gives him time to contact DVLA himself, to confirm.

Better still, if you're corresponding by email, look it up yourself on the DVLA website and send him the link.

Page 8, bang smack in the middle of page 8, here: http://www.direct.gov.uk/prod_consum_dg/groups/dg_digitalassets/@dg/@en/@motor/documents/digitalasset/dg_065264.pdf

From that page, the relevant paragraph:

You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Btw - have you booked the Ferry yet ?

They are VERY busy at the mo, and we've had trouble getting crew over and back on the Ferry in the last few weeks.

Plane booked, hotel booked, night out in Liverpool sorted, car freshly MOT'd, seller driving it to ferry as he has trade plates, ferry booked and V5C shall be provided in full as he is a trade seller and already knew I'd want it all.

    Everything sorted me thinks.

And he is driving 189 miles to deliver it to me and will sort any issues which arise before delivery. :D

Does anyone know of any shows or meets taking place on Monday next along the east coast? I'm in Wicklow and would like to go somewhere with the car when I'm home

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,261 ✭✭✭mgbgt1978

As regards the "purchase invoice" or receipt you can print something off the internet (and both sign it) or in this case as he is a trade seller just get him to give you a receipt.

Remember the days when you could buy a Marina for £50, and the seller got the better end of the deal.:)

    just to note lads.

I didn't get the V5 with a car I bought. I filled it out with my whole address and the VRO sent me the V5 a few days later with a note apologising for them not being able to register the car in my name in the UK !

But I wouldn't and didn't do that again!

Is that work you did or work that was done on the car when you bought it? Looks like its had the doors painted at some stage, though seems a straight honest car.
You are selling straight away, not using it for a bit for the fun of it!?
    I like the Supercover sticker!

The guy owns another forum and there is a very extensive thread on the Marina owners club forum about all the work done so its all documented
Looks like its had the doors painted at some stage, though seems a straight honest car.
Honest is the best description. Its not perfect but its in perfect condition for one which could be used daily. A good clean up of some bubbling and a respray would see it all right.

I will be. Its actually the most solid classic I've had. I generally stick them up for sale soon after getting them as the chances of a quick sale are TINY
    I like the Supercover sticker!
Its gave me comfort on the way home knowing that Leyland Supercover would come to the rescue if there were any issues.
