We have just got our planning and starting to look at the internal stuff.
We are thinking of putting a double sided insert fire between our sitting room and the main Kitchen/dining/tv room
Size of rooms: Sitting room 240 sq ft, TvRoom 204Sq ft joining to kitchen/dining (580sq ft)
There is a fixed wall between these 2 areas , wont be just the fireplace separating the rooms

    Something like the attached
both are available as double sided

Has anyone else got something like this and do they find them good heat providers , we will also have UFH in these rooms but want some sort of fire as well. WOuld we be better with 2 separate fires/ Stoves ?

IMHO, you'd be better off sorting out your building fabric (walls, windows, air-tightness) and installing an MVHR system thereby reducing the need for underfloor heating and two fire places, maybe you could get away with stove for the whole house... now there's something to aspire too.
BTW love first fireplace picture, great wood store

We are looking at the build type etc already and i am just looking into the type of fire/size etc , that is why I am asking for opionions from people who have these inserts.

If you are considering a double sided fireplace make sure you have all the details nailed down prior to commencing the build, and that your builder knows exactly how the unit is built in. Some require special flues, air supplies from the external wall etc. It's not rocket scince, but it does require some consideration at the outset. I am about to install one shortly for clients and we're just finalising the details now.

    Hi ClareLady,

We have just installed a Scan DSA 12 double sided stove but haven't lit it yet so can't tell you how good it is!

I agree with Supertech. We had looked at a good few double sided stoves before we started building and made sure we knew the style we wanted when we were designing the room. We had to put in an external air supply that was put in when we were pouring the raft so you do really need to know what your putting in at an early stage. The guys we bought it off told us to leave the opening really big (Height x Width) as it gives you scope to change models later on. But you'll also need to watch for the depth and if your going to clad in stone - if your going for a flush look this will be important. Another thing to consider is whether or not you want to hang a TV above it (you'll see some threads on it here) - we decided not to and had to shift the focus slightly in the room to incorporate the stove and TV.

The good thing is there seems to be alot more on the market in the last year or two from when we started looking.

    Hi Clarelady,

I am practically having the same issues that you were having a few months ago and wondering if you could provide an update. I am just going for tender at the moment and i have the same kind of split in the rooms and a number of stove places said that the rooms were such a difference size that i would not be able to control the heating between the rooms.

    Hi
we have just got our tender prices back so haven't got a chance to go and source the stoves/ inserts but we def want to go for an insert rather than a stove. Don't know why there is an issue really but have nt actually spoken to anyone about them. What did the places say was the issue in havin a insert in between 2 rooms if different sizes ?

    Hi
the issue is in relation to a double sided insert heating the 2 rooms of different sizes. The smaller room willl be roasting when you are heating the larger room as you could effectively require a eg. 10Kw for the large room a a 5kw for the smaller room. In addition say if you were in the smaller room you might have the insert going at half pace but that will mean it will be less efficient.
Another stove place said that it was less of an issue as you could restrict some of the airflow for the smaller room.
