Mobile broadband.

I am technologically dumb and require some sort of mobile broadband - the most value for money one, if possible.

I use the internet a ridiculous amount, I watch a lot of videos online (tv shows, that is!!) and surf the internet 24/7 but very rarely download.

What's the best coverage wise? I'll be living in town/renmore.

I enquired in o2 today - they have an offer on prepay, free modem when you buy 2 months @ €20/month (5GB). Or €20 a month for 12 months and the modem costs €29 (15GB).

What are 3 and vodafone like?

When you browse the internet, you are essentially 'downloading'. ALL traffic you view on the internet is considered 'downloading'. If you're a heavy video/music watcher/listener, I don't think 5GB/month will cut it

If you are such a heavy user then even 15GB wont be enough in my opinion. If you go over the limit they will charge you 2 cent a MB.

Yep, mobile broadband is definitely a waste of time if you're any sort of a heavy user.

Three have 60GB for €30 and Meteor have recently started giving customers 50GB, might want to contact them about that one before taking it as fact.

Those would be the best for data allowances but actual performance and quality will vary so if you can get landline broadband then go for that instead.

agree that 10GB is not enough if you're streaming tv shows. you'll burn through that very quick. on o2 myself and find it decent enough. no complaints about it

"Best" is a very subjective term where mobile broadband (midband) is concerned, and not something you can determine without checking for yourself. What works for someone else, even near by, may not work at all for you.

As mentioned, if you are a heave user of streaming video, then this is not for you. It's intended use is for mobility, not as a home broadband substitute, even if the operators would like to think that it is.

I would strongly advise you to think about using an alternative to mobile broadband.

My apologies if you I'm telling you what you know already, but you mentioned not being very "tech savvy".

Do you NEED to have mobile broadband? Do you want access on the go? Coverage can be patchy enough in my experience of it.

If you don't absolutely need to be able to have access on the go, I would strongly advise going for UPC or something similar.

In Renmore you should be able to get the basic package for e25 a month. It is far far better than any mobile broadband. Many times faster, you will not reach any download cap and it will not go out of coverage. You can stream very high quality video without a problem with it also.

It took me less than two minutes to locate this on the UPC site:
The monthly data transfer allowance is 120GB for Fibre Power Broadband 12Mb, 250GB for Fibre Power Broadband 25Mb and 50Mb and 500GB for Fibre Power Broadband 100Mb.

Please don't advise someone that there is no download cap when the terms and conditions clearly state there is.

    From the first post:

Now, how can you or civis_liberalis say with certainty she won't reach the cap?

Jesus your surely on the wind up with a comment like that. Its very doubtful she would break that limit. Especially one person. You are backtracking now from originally saying that he said there was NO download limit.

There is nothing wrong with Malice's warning, as it is is certainly possible for one person to use 250GB a month if streaming a lot of video and being online 24/7, as the OP said. Now, it's possible that 250GB will be more than enough, but you cannot say that she won't hit a cap (because the cap is there, and it is very possible to hit it).

Look this will be my last word on this. the poster above rushed in giving out about the previous poster saying that he said there was no download limit. That wasnt true. I read these forums alot and infractions have been given out for a lot less. Just because the poster above is a moderator doent mean that they are not accountable for what they write.

I'm not backtracking at all. You can't be sure she won't break the cap and I didn't correct myself on what civis_liberalis wrote. Please provide evidence of this otherwise your claims read as spurious hysteria and will be treated as such by me.
Look this will be my last word on this. the poster above rushed in giving out about the previous poster saying that he said there was no download limit.
I didn't rush in and I didn't give out. I merely corrected what civis_liberalis had written.
    That wasnt true.
    What wasn't true?
I read these forums alot and infractions have been given out for a lot less.
Don't make me laugh. Are you seriously suggesting my post was infraction worthy?
Just because the poster above is a moderator doent mean that they are not accountable for what they write.
Ah, this old chestnut. If you really read these forums a lot you'll know I have as much juristiction on this forum as you do and I am as accountable as you are.

Stop back seat modding. Your reports have been noted, and as I've already said on thread, there was nothing wrong with Malice's warning about the cap. Your posts are verging on trolling at this stage, so end it now. Malice is not a moderator on this forum either, so don't bring that into it.

In general, infractions are not issued for giving incorrect information, especially when it's not incorrect information. There may be a misunderstanding between what civis_liberalis said and what was meant, but it does no harm for someone to clarify that there is indeed a cap, and that it is possible to exceed it when streaming lots of video online.

I'm just moving into town for the summer, then back out to Renmore in September, so I can't exactly get a broadband package. We had/have (still using it despite canceling it for June!) a sweet UPC package.

And if mobile broadband doesn't support my video addiction, I guess I can cut down, and I probably won't have much time anyway since I've 2 jobs!

    Thanks, I appreciate it! :)

Just keep an eye on your usage, checking on a daily basis. You can monitor your usage with your online account with the 3G provider. There'll be usage stats in there somewhere (varies with the different operators). They all charge (heavily) for going over, so don't even be tempted to do it. Typical charge is about €10 per GB.
