ok bear with me here please!

these trips will be just me and my gf.
we are going to rome for 4 nights on 29th august...nothing too complicated there unless you wish to advise on anything :)

heres where my dilemma starts, i want to go to edinburgh, prague and munich-austria( zell am see) but i do not know when to do each trip. i have a week off work in october and have 2 weeks i can book from next jan-may with one for each trip. personally, i love freezing cold weather even without snow but snow is even better once it doesnt hinder our trip in any way. i was thinking edinburgh in october, prague in jan and munich/austria in may? i would love to see austria and munich in winter but because i wish to travel around and see zell am see and berchtesgaden i figure it would be best to have warmer weather for then.

what would you guys recommend? any of ye been to above mentioned places in austria?
    thank you

Prague in January will be particularly dark, cold and gloomy. I must admit I find some joy in that kind of atmosphere as well. But you should be well prepared for it. Do not expect pretty white snow on the ground and a warm sun in the sky.

there is something very nice about the cold alright. i do not long for sun in the sky, just cold and dry preferably

I have been to Prague around that time of the year and did not find it to be particularly dry. There is a lot of (muddy, gray) snow on the ground. And more is likely to be falling from the sky.

so what would you recommend? edinburgh in jan, prague in oct?

Hard to tell. I just dug through old pictures from a visit to Prague for the New Year. Brings back good memories only. It may have been miserable and cold... but Prague is always fun :). So I think you should plan the other cities based on weather and then visit Prague during the time that is left at that point. Whether you go in the winter or summer, you cannot go wrong with Prague.

the lake in zell is frozen in winter and the whole place becomes a winter wonderland, i was there in the height of summer, its a beautiful either time of year, the problem with winter is that you might not get a chance to see the wonderful mountains close because of cloud cover and also accommodation prices will be skyhigh in winter because thats when the ski people arrive

honestly do munich around oktoberfest time, such an amazing buzz around the town for those 2 or so weeks, weather was really good last year, pragues easy enough to combine with munich, its about 5hr by bus/train

thank you rossie, first hand experience is exactly what i wanted. i wish to make a separate trip of prague though and munich is the nearest to zell am see. im not too pushed on oktoberfest though ill mention it to the other half. would zell am see be still nice in october? could you recommend any other nice cities for a short break in spring next yr?

I went to mayrhofen to go skiing. Flew to munich though and rented a car and drove from there! Drove back to munich then two days early so we could see the place, saw the olympic stadium, olympic park lake, english garden, old pinakothek, marienplatz, st peters church and various other sites! it was amazing in january though thats when i went. Should defo go then!

well when we did zell we combined it with innsbruck (stunning city) and salzburg

october will be a bit of a hit and miss weather wise in austria, could be nice, could be raining, we spent couple of days in fussen right on the austrian border (another lovely spot if you get the chance) early october last year, first day was lovely, low 20s, second day rained most of the day and third day was warm and sunny again, but to get the most out of austria you need good weather, its such a spectacular place that even the trip on the train from innsbruck to zell is an adventure

spring is usually best time to visit the likes of lisbon, madrid, barcelona, rome, nice/monaco/cannes, florence etc, gets a little too warm in the summer in those places

haha i know sorry but i just really loved it then :P u wouldnt even need a car in munich anyway, only reason we did was coz we had so much ski equipment with us! The buses and trains would be perfect, no need to overcomplicate it with a car!
Oh and paris would be another nice place to visit in the spring, especially if u are going with ur gf! Or venice :)

been to paris, didnt like it at all at all, much prefered berlin. paris was a bit of a kip imho, apart from the boat trip and the tower of course.

will look up the location of all those places you mentioned rossie thank you :)

    and edinburgh?
