On a scale of 1 to 10, how handy are ya with what you're at?

Its easiest if both partions are empty (and it looks like both have 100% free).

Looks like F: used to have an operating system on it.

If they are not empty you will lose data so be careful.

Right click on Highlighted Data (D:) Drive and click delete (in the bottom pane).

Do the same for OS (F:).

Once you have deleted both there will be a large area of Unallocated Space.

Right Click and click "Create" follow the instructions to set up a logical partition (the default values should take up the full space so it should be just follow the simple instructions).

Any more difficulty post the screenshot.

Thanks a million for getting back to me so quickly. I'll give it a lash.

Both partitions are definitely empty (brand new computer)

The only thing I''m worried about is the OS definitely all on C, yeah? I know these are ridiculously ignorant q's but I just had to recover the OS and I chose to '' Recover to entire HD with two partitions. ''

I've made backup dvds so I suppose I'm just nervous?

Nothing to worry about, especially with what you think are ignorant questions, its better to ask them before you do it than risk making a mess of it.

Take your time and just stay away from the C drive which is the important one with the current OS on it.

If you have your backup DVD's and its a new pc you have even less to worry about as you can recover using the backup.

Look at the status of each of the drive the C drive contains all of the things the OS needs, boot flag / page file etc.

So I had to do a system restore again and that solved the partition problem for now.

However- I kept getting a chkdsk message on bootup, I installed HDTune and I got no errors on thedisk so it seems to be fine. Ran chkdsk and windows started fine, but now I can't install windows updates, they keep failing.

I've had a google but looking for some hands-on experience. I don't seem to have service pack 1 installed though.

This is what came with Windows:

Should any of that be interfering with a Windows update installation?

    Thanks again.

Try to manually download SP1 locally to your hard disk and running it from the C:\.

If I burn this iso highlighted, is that it it in a nutshell?

Or do I have to go through all files and pick the ones I need?

Download the image. Right-click it and "Burn disc image". Then run it from the DVD.

Thanks Andy, I'm getting a remote repair done on my machine later today so hopefully that'll shed some light on the issue. I'm just wary of doing anything else to it, I've done enough. The moral of the story is- Bloatware is evil and should be illegal.
