If its the 210 model(95-02) then keep in mind that this is the model that almost lost mercedes its reputation for making premium vehicles as they were so poorly made compared to previous models.

some info here on BAR ASR warning light - very common fault. Also make sure the auto box is sliky smooth and the mileage is genuine.

I'm no expert but I almost bought one myself and was put off it. According to my 'Merc Man' that car was the worst Merc ever. Bad power, bad economy, bad engine, sh1t overall quality.

But I need to repeat this is only second hand information/hearsay.

You would be much better off buying an early W211 (2002-2003) E200 Kompressor than an E240 for all sorts of reasons, service costs and road tax being two of them.

What sort of money is the E240 going for and is it a W210 or W211?

The merc V6 is a twin spark engine, so has 12 spark plugs and they are far from cheap to change. Other then that, general servicing isn't much more expensive then your average car.

The problem arises when they go wrong as Mercedes parts, especially electronic parts, are VERY expensive here.

Why? During the celtic tiger the market was flooded with new e-class's and 5 series etc, making them relatively worthless in the second hand market

I have a customer who recently bought a fully loaded 04 BMW 540i, 90k worth of car new, for 8k!

My bad. Having just looked some up online it is a bit pricey alright..I assumed with peoples obsession with German cars in this country that people would think its value should be more.

    Here is one for €4900,

The W211 isn't without known problems. Some major.

There's a problem with the earlier ones where the cooling system lets coolant/antifreeze (glycol) into the transmission. This wrecks the torque converter. Think the problem is with early Valeo radiators. A modified (Valeo) part was used from 09/2003 onwards.

Merc have a TSB about it and can test the tranny fluid for presence of glycol.

There are a load of minor electrical problems too that will cause problems at NCT. One I have encountered is where the baby seat sensors break forcing the airbag to be always on and triggers the SRS light. Merc quoted my bro almost 1000 for this. I fixed it for Eur 50.

Also ball joints in upper control arms go at c. 60k (micks garage do them for c. 130 and 1 hour job per side)

Early W211 might have some (serious) problems with breaking pump - SBC.
Motor tax for E240 (2.6l engine) engine is 1120  per year, and that was one of the reasons why I was looking for E200 (1.8 charged engine - tax 551 per year). I'd love to have V6 engine, but 600 euro per year on tax alone was too much.
