I was just wondering what is the best tactic when looking for jobs in London?
Is it better just to move over there and go from there or just apply for jobs online with companies, recruiters etc?

    Thanks.

I would tend look online first then move after i has secured the job, if it comes down to it and they want you to start straight away you can allways live in a youth hostel for a week or two untill you find a place to live

I have lived and worked in UK for last 8 years. Moved back to Ireland last October.

Definitely wait until you get a job before going over. You don't want to bound yourself to a job just because of the location that you went to when you first arrived.

What kinda job you looking for? If it is bar work/hairdressing them prob easier to be over there. But if it is engineering/accountancy then i would go through the web and wait for job before going over.

I friend of mine went to London for a few days and visited architects offices with her CV. The whole point was that she would introduce herself and the company would be able to put a face to the CV, instead of going to reems of CV's emailed to them! She got positive feedback from most companies. She ended up getting a job in Berlin, and she got a call back from two London companies after she took the job asking to call back for another interview. She did do her research though before she flew over!

It looks like I'll be doing the same!

Good luck, London is a great town!

I am mainly looking for media based work, as I have experience in print and tv production, but I would be willing to consider any jobs at this stage! In Ireland it's all about who you know really when getting a job I have found ;)

Thanks for the advice everybody. I'll be sure to do plenty of research. Do you think its better to go down the recruitment agency route or just look for job online?

Keep your options open, and don't believe everything recruitment agencies tell ya!

not trying to hijack the OP's thread but I too am seriously considering the UK as my next step..

I'm currently working in a contract role (Senior IT admin - which is a step back from the IT Manager role I had in my last job before I was made redundant but it's better than nothing), and it's unlikely it'll be renewed again when it expires.

Can anyone recommend some good UK IT job sites that I could start with?

    Cheers!

I moved to London last summer after spending a few months on the dole, living with my parents. I tried for several months to get a job (in I.T.) here without first moving over but I found it impossible.

I'd get calls from recruitment companies and companies i'd applied to asking me if I could come in for an interview that week and i'd have to turn them down because I couldn't afford to buy a flight for travel at such short notice.

In the end I decided to save up some money and move over. I went on Gumtree and managed to sub-let a room in an apartment in London from a girl who was going traveling for the summer.

If you are on JSA you can transfer your benefits to another EU for 12 weeks at the same rate you are receiving in Ireland, by the way. But make sure the local office in Ireland does it correctly - mine completely screwed it up and I had no dole payment for almost 2 months, by which time I had already found a job!

Two job websites I would recomment: theitjobboard.co.uk and jobisjob.co.uk
Gumtree is quite good too. cwjobs.co.uk seems to have the same jobs advertised by a number of big recruiters.
