Whats your budget ? thats the first thing. Piano prices can vary as much as car prices . For a new piano (upright) expect to pay in the region of €3000 up for an anyway decent new one . If you do decide to buy second hand there are a few factors you will need to allow for , the most important one is what condition it is in and were was it kept . What ever house you go to look at one in may have had it in the garage for years then taken it in to sell it , polished it and then tell you there sorry to see it go then you end up with a crock of s**t , I have heard of this happening believe it or not so bring somebody that knows a bit about them with you so they can check the weight of the keys , tone , asthetics etc etc .
It would be a good idea to go into a shop that sells pianos like Waltons for example and see whats on offer for your budget then check out a few other shops that sell reconditioned pianos that might be of a higher value but sold cheaper caus there second or third hand , Pianos Plus for example you might get a lovely reconditioned Yamaha or Samick .
You will have to budget into your cost tuning , it doesnt matter what anybody tells you , if a piano is transported from A to B it will need to be retuned because it will slip out a bit

If thats your budget then check out these guys http://www.pianosplus.ie/ stay away from the likes of Buy & Sell . There is a guy in there i cant remember his name (quite posh) but he is really good , dont tell them what your budget is just have a figure in mind say €4000 you will get a fantastic piano for that and you have room for moving up if you want. You got to remember a piano is an investment and you will probably have it for a long long time . Who is playing it ? if its for starting the kids off try and get one that doesnt have keys that are too heavily weighted , you will get good advice in there . If you got the space you can pick up a baby grand for €5000 . If you buy new, after they deliver it its standard policy to come out and retune it for you within a day or two and then give you a retune F,O,C in 12 months be sure to ask about this .
They should also (they may not unless you ask) throw in a piano stool , try and get one that is height adjustable there alot better . You will also be advised on the best brands . I have a yamaha and love it but Samick and Kawai are beautyfull also , that end of it is really down to you however i dont think Pianos Plus do Samick you have to go to Waltons for that .

    Good Luck

Bayles, that's interesting you say standard policy is to tune it within a day or two of delivery. I've been advised to tell my customers who I move pianos for to wait 3-4 weeks before tuning once the piano has been put in its new place to allow it to settle to the temperature etc of it's new home.

You are correct and thats the way it should be although i have seen it vary from place to place , this tends to be why they give a free tuning 12 months after purchase . Idealy as you say 2 or 3 weeks i would concider industry standard

    Marky

I am not affiliated to or work for any musicial instrument shop . I make my living as a professional Bass player however i am also a multi instrumentalist and piano is one of the instruments i play.
I have had dealings with both these stores in the past and found them 100% on information and back up service and would happily recommend them to family and friends .
There are other piano shops in Dublin but none that i would be prepared to mention here because i have not dealt with them . Mabey somebody else will come on and recommend one but they are the only two that i am going to .

I would also suggest trying Thornton pianos on Berkeley Road, family run business and they know their stuff. Sometimes have some great reconditioned pianos, also do new.

I know Straffan antiques do pianos as well. I dont know how they compare to other places though.
