Looking to buy new set of irons as the ones i'm using at present are a disgrace.

Was on mcguirks golf website earlier and the 2 sets i'd be interested in are the nike ignite set for 300 euro, or the callaway big bertha widesole 2008 edition for 350 euro.

Anyone have any opinions or experiences with theese sets?

Also read somewhere that buying from golf retail store would be better than buying online. as they sometimes measure you and order you a custom design for free of charge??

Im only new myself so not in a position to help you but why dont you go to mcguirks or the likes and try them out, decide for urself then, both very well known popular brands ;)

Are you just starting out OP?

I'm not at it long either and my set of irons cost me €150 3-SW. I didn't want to spend too much in case I gave it up after a short while!

nike's are not a patch on the callaways. feel and look cheap, tacky, flimsy.
those berthas have a great rep.

Both nike and callaway are good brands but its really down to what suits you and your swing. They should have a simulator screen that you can hit a few balls at,I just bought a set of cobra s3 irons but spent a good hour hitting them on the sim. was hitting them well so got them. Just take your time in the shop and you'l get the right clubs, and if the staff are good you'l also get a free lesson :) hope that helps a little

If you are buying new irons, you can get custom fit, at no extra cost (once you buy them). I know halpenny have custom fit nights in the fingal golf range, beside the airport. Go into the shop in airside and look at what irons they have, then book the fitting. I got X22's from them last year and they are excellent. I think there is still good value for them. Just get 4-PW, and the price should be quite similar to what you said. at the fitting you can try out different ones and see what you like, then they put a sticker on the bottom of the club to see if you drag the heel or toe of the club for most of your shots, and thats where they custom fit the angles. I had to get mine 1 degree upritght, and it's really helped get rid of pushed right shots. If you are tall or short they will also suggest longer or shorter clubs. This other website describes it better:

I would advise being patient with your buy, at that money you will probably use them for a good few years and it's worth the effort. I think McGuirkes do the same in the Grange Driving range, and most driving ranges have demo 6 irons in reception that you can try out too. NOTE: they do charge for this service, but if you buy the clubs from them, it comes fully off the cost. There are X24's coming out now, so if the X22's are availble, they should be a good deal. Actually seeing full ball flight is the only way to go.

    Take your time deciding.
Go to as many golf shops where they do fitting it's free advice.
Most clubs need to be adjusted to your swing, speed etc
Might even be worth going for a lesson with a pro

Golf is 90% confidence so it's worth taking the time to decide.

I have had Callaway irons in the past and although I liked them, I found they didn't suit me. I then bought Cleveland and was a happy camper as they just felt more comfortable to hit and hold ..... as others have said: its all about confidence and to each his own. My clevelands were wearing thin and when it came time to change, I ended up buying the Nike VR series about two months ago ( Itend to changer every 2/3 years).

The VRs are a step up from the Ignite and they work well for me .... the big bonus was I also bought a 54/12 Nike wedge and it has been a revalation in terms of my touch around the greens. I would say that all the wide / flat sole irons are fine to to a 9 iron but for pitching and touch, I would shy away from them as they bound more than cut into the turf.

You can always look at your mates and try a shot or two with their clubs (in a practice round of course;)) as it might give you a feel for what works for you.

best of luck and dont be afraid to take your time as they can be a costly mistake.

    Ps
the Nike Ignite were 229e in American Golf in March which is very low and suggests issues selling them. Also make sure you check online if the clubs you select are current and not last years style, as you will have lost money before you even leave the shop.

OP i was looking at the Callaway big bertha today in Mcguriks and i didn't like one bit. The heads are far too big. I saw another set of Callways but cost five hundred just for the irons. My advise would be to vist Mcguirks in howth, if your spending big money then you can bargin and get a bag, trolley throwing in as well. Maybe even an oddsessy putter ;)
