PSN failed to obtain IP address

Hey all, about last week I as playing online with some friends when the internet cut out and displayed a red light on the router for just a few seconds, it happened to another one of my friends at the same time in the area but it came back pretty quickly, I thought nothing of it and went to bed.

A few days later I try to sign in to psn abut it wont. Not a problem I think so I go to enter in all the details in internet connection settings on the ps3 again and it fails. I get the message "attempt to obtain ip address has timed out".
Now if I try to connect via the "easy" method it succeeds but I get a NAT type 3, which is no good for online gaming of course.

Ages of searching online forums etc and testing small things dug up nothing for me.
Today I came on here and read the sticky and am attempting to port forward to get NAT2. Following the guide on portforward.com I ran into a problem when entering the port range. The guide tells me to enter a port range of "80 - 80", base port 80 and TCP selected. But when I went to continue to gives me an error message "Global port range overlaps with HTTP"

I search online for solutions to that and came across a pretty helpful forum post here http://forum.portforward.com/YaBB.cgi?num=1247940159

Following all the instructions listed and enabling the HTTP service and getting the exact result as displayed on the forum post I went to retry port forwarding with high hopes. They were crushed as I still get the same message error "Global port range overlaps with HTTP".

I also came across http://forum.portforward.com/YaBB.cgi?num=1294509570 and disabled UPnP and tried with the exact same result as above.

I'm at the end of my patients here and am sick of searching and testing the connection countless times. I have also tried a wired connection with the ethernet from my router to ps3 and I still get the failed to obtain ip address. But once again I can still get NAT3 when setting the connection through easy mode. This is driving me crazy, almost a week has gone past.

Why did the internet cut out on that night and what did it change to screw up the connection so much?
Why didn't my friend who lives about 200m down the road from me experience the same problem, his ps3 is connecting away grand.

So I'm asking no, begging! if anybody knows what to do please help me out! It would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Have you tried putting your PS3 in a DMZ? I don't know if it will make any difference, I don't have a clue about these things, but I did it and my NAT Type went to "Open" on Black Ops.

It sounds like port 80 (which is HTTP) is an already defined service on your router, so its trying to tell you that you don't need to define the port range again.. Is there a drop down menu where you can select HTTP from a list.

What Internet provider are you with and whats the make/model of your router?

Yeah there is a drop down menu with HTTP in it. As posted in the first portfoward forum link I followed what that person was instructed to do and enabled it. I couldn't edit HTTP as it just said "Only custom services can be edited."

    My router is a Netopia 2247-62 software v 7.8.2r2.
    My isp is Eircom.

Yeah I was attempting that a few days ago but at the time I was after spending hours reading crappy forum posts and searching for solutions so when I wasn't able to find the dmz option or whatever on my router control panel I just gave up. I don't have a clue about these things either.

If your using a Netopia Router forget about NAT 2. It just doesn't let you get it no matter what you try. I ended up buying a Netgear router to get round it..

I wonder if Eircom have changed their PPPoE password.. I can try and set my router to NAT1 later on to see if it works for me. Unless someone else wants to try first.

Here's the guide I followed to open my NAT for Black Ops anyway. The DMZ part is in Step 6, Part 1.

    Good luck!

I would be able to do this if I could only find where the DMZ option is on my routers interface. Perhaps its named something. Its a Motorolla Netopia 2247-62

Just thought I would give an update here. After lots of procrastination and lethargy I decided to ring eircom about this problem. They were actually very helpful and completely understood the problem. Basically my router crapped out due to its old age, or something like that as I had thought. So they sent me out another one for free (free only if agree to 12 month contract terms). I don't mind though.

I was recommended to get a better router for gaming online or in stores but I said Ill take the free one and see how it goes, then Ill buy a better one if I need to.

    Sound group of guys :)
