Serbia for the EU

Not sure if this is the right place, so apologies if it needs to be moved.

In light of the recent capture of Ratko Mladic and the protests that his imminent extradition have evoked in Serbia, I am wondering how people feel about their potential membership of the EU.

I am very wary of anyone who would generalise about anything, let alone an entire nation, so I will thread lightly. However I was shocked at the outpouring of support for this man in Serbia, particularly among 'students', who one might imagine were less affected by the old hatreds that afflict many nations including our own.

Does anyone else consider these scenes worrying, or was it simply a minority of protestors exercising their right to protest.
The fact that the Serbian government were so incompetent in coming forward with Mladic might also be a sign that Serbian society is not as upset about his crimes than the wider international community.

    Just looking for opinions?

Contrast that with the 2 million Serbs that showed up to oust Milosevic.

and, again, we can ask the same question, why are only Serbs singled out?

Sure it is not going in their favor showing support for man accused of such crimes but it is also obvious they are not the only ones with this kind of attitude in Balkans.

And nobody is questioning those attitudes. Am I missing something here?

If I may notice, they probably have more reason not to be happy with International Court in Hague, regarding its treatment of Serbia comparing to other ex-Yugoslavia countries. Just remember their (Hague) appalling decision to release Ramus Hardinai, ex KLA commander, or Naser Oric, ex Bosniak Army commander in Srebrenica...

So it would be fair to assume that some segments of Serbian society are deeply frustrated with this, in their eyes, pressure applied only on their side, while the war criminals on other sides are escaping justice.

Same could be said about Croatia fasttrack into EU membership while war criminals remain loose.
