    http://www.dublinbus.ie/en/News-Centre/Travel-News/Route-123-change-of-Bus-Stop/

On the face of it we see a rationalization of City Centre Bus Stops to tidy-up the place, perhaps in an attempt to flee the very dangerous situation caused by Dualway Tours continued dangerous and illegal occupation of the O Connell St/Sackville Place junction, from where it operates despite it not having a licenced Stop .....

However, when we pick away at the threads we start to unravel a rather hastily stitched cloth indeed.

It appears that in the haste to reallocate the busy 123 route, nobody felt the need to actually walk across from Dublin Bus Head Office and take a peep at the situation pertaining outside the Savoy Cinema.

The first thing they might have seen is Taxi's,and lots of them...stationary Taxi's,driven by Taxidrivers driven demented by the lack of regulation in their industry which allows them to double park, queue up,and much else at the very location where Dublin Bus now wishes to INCREASE the number of Bus movements significantly...sheesh...talk about playing with fire...

Neither did those folks bother to take note of the decision, taken one supposes by a totally different authority,to MOVE the AirCoach stop from it's old location, outside the Gresham Hotel, to a new spot closer to the Dublin Bus stop "OM".

Of course, even if they had bothered,it is unlikely they would have appreciated just how different the operation of an AirCoach Stop is to a "Normal" Dublin Bus one....Foreign Visitors,Luggage stowage and retrieval,Questions,Answers,Direction pointing........delay delay delay....:o

Sigh....it just gets worse and worse....decisions taken by persons unknown, from offices far away which, when implemented, significantly increase the risk of accident and/or incident....

Mind you,one perfectly feasible answer would be to move the Number 11 from stop "OM" and instead have it utilize it's current Stop "OQ" as it's sole O Connell St stop, given that the 11 is the only major cross city route which is required to stop TWICE along O Connell St..?

Anyway, for those of you who are out 'n about in An Lár on a daily basis do keep an eye on developments outside the Savoy... !!!

I'd agree with most of your post, but to blame the situation regarding the taxi rank on regulation is wrong. The problem is with the taxi drivers themselves at this location and the fact that the Garda do not bother their barnies enforcing the law. The Taxi drivers think they have the right to determine movements at that rank, which most of the time isn't a rank, it's a parking spot for drivers to go and get some food evidenced by the amount of "overtaking" in the rank that goes on.

Sure what has enforcing the law got to do with the Gardaí? If they were to be doing that who would hold up the walls of the GPO and of course the nearest Garda station is miles away from that rank so it's not as if the chaos caused is obvious to them.
A couple of tow trucks assigned to taxi ranks for a month would sort the problem but you know what, it won't happen, because that would mean some overpaid bureaucrat in DCC would have to get over their fat arse to organise it, which might knock their golf game back by an hour.

Yeah, it's such a long walk from just across the road.

But like the taxi drivers getting their food/meals at the rank the garda use that office much the same, sitting in the back where the public can't get to them.

Perhaps also the taxi drivers could play their part and be active in seeking business rather than waiting for it to turn up whilst they are illegally parking ? Surely after they sign on they could hang around and pick up some business there ?

Enforcement is an issue in a lot of these situations - free travel fraud, taxis parking up wherever they want, litter, abuse of public-facing staff - but it's also very sad to see that so many people (almost an entire industry in the case of taxis) consider themselves to be above the law but yet are quite happy to ring Joe when it's applied to them.

I would imagine that taxi drivers, like everyone else, will see themselves as subject to the law when it is applied to them. Currently, it is not.

Or they could be like the rest of us and know that the law applies to them. I haven't murdered anyone but I know the law applies to me ; I haven't stolen from anyone but I know the law applies to me ; I haven't defrauded anyone but I know the law applies to me.

exactly, taxi drivers know the Gardai and Regulator and NTA are too lazy to actually do anything about the constant breaches so they just keep at it.

I can see how the wild-west scenario the Taxi Industry has crafted for itself is colouring peoples views of it's members and their activities.

However that also allows the likes of Dualway to get away with equally dangerous and wilful breaches of the Road Traffic Acts,Health and Safety regulations and just plain ol commonsense.

It is little more than corporate thuggery to station and operate it's Open Top tour services from the O Connell St/Sackville Place junction.

The Double Deck vehicle is actually parked directly on the exit from the Pedestrian Crossing outside Clery's.

It obstructs vision and access to the legitimate Bus Stop for Dublin bus routes and more importantly it causes real obstruction for approaching mororists, cyclists and pedestrians at that very busy location, which alsom includes the left-turn into Abbey St used by many Bus Eireann services bound for Busaras.

With both Dualway and Dublin Bus Tours having one allocated legitimate Stop on O Connell St,why, one wonders are Dualway then allowed to simply pick a second lucrative location and operate away from it in spite of the very obvious danger this imposes on their own customers and the general public ?

Dualway already have a Stop 1A,but since this is located on Abbey Street it obviously does'nt suit their business plan so it can be equally ignored....one wonders do the Senior Gardai, the NTA or Dublin City Council officials actually ever leave their offices and venture out into THEIR area of responsibility or are they content to sit and wait for the inevitable serious accident to occur ?

One wonders if anyone has bothered to report this to the Gardai/NTA?

If a formal complain is entered, then perhaps they will do something about it.

Not having the 122 & 123 stop at the same stop is ridiculous.
