    hope someone can help me,

In an automatic, when stopping at a traffic light, do you put the car in Park or do you leave it in Drive with the foot pedal on???

    thanks in advance

There was a thread about it not too long ago AFAIR.

Normally leave in drive unless stopped for more than a few seconds.

Yup leave it in drive. Put it in Park when you're parking. No good can come out of shifting it from D to P constantly.

I'm not entirely sure leaving it in drive will be seen as best practice by the driving test instructor.

I remember being told that leaving my manual car in gear at traffic would result in a mark in the driving test, so I can imagine the automatic test being similar.
You were told wrongly so, its the same for a manual, leave it in gear if stopped for a few seconds, if longer stick her in neutral. (having done my test and passed, just over a year ago following this method.)
