Presta valve going into wheel...

    Hi
    Newbie alert.
I got a bike with a presta valve on the wheels.
When I attach the pump the valves go into the wheel.
Is there a way to tighten them?
Should I just get a pliers and twist the vale to the right?
    I don't want to break them :)

    thanks
    m

You can get the little nuts that screw onto the valve that prevent that happening. I had them on one bike and never realised what they were for until it almost happened to me on a bike that didn't have them, that was my eureka moment.

Scroll down to Presta valves here http://www.sheldonbrown.com/gloss_p.html and you'll see them in the pic, it appears they're called Jam or lock nuts.

You'll have to change the tube though if your valve isn't threaded as far as I know. I've had some valves that were completely smooth so you couldn't screw a washer onto them.

Don't use a pliers and twist the valve, you'll only end up snapping it off. Maybe try holding the valve carefully with your fingers as you push the pump head on. I find once I've a bit of air in, it's easier to push the head of the pump on more fully as the tube is harder. You just need to make sure you don't let your tyres go soft :)

Press under the valve from the outside or just make sure you have enough pressure in there in the first place.

Deflate the tyre fully first. Then compress the tyre at the valve, so that the valve is in the correct position. Then attach your pump and inflate the tyre.

I have a giant escape hybrid bike with presta valves and the captive nut things on top of the valve and then the black valve cap............however today i went down to check my bike and the front tyre is flat and no longer has the tiny gold captive nut thing on top - no idea where it's gone or how it managed to break off the presta valve - tried to pump it up regardless but no luck, any ideas what I can do?

Can I buy the captive nut part? Can it be reattached to the presta valve?

Just hold down the tyre on the valve side to stop it going in until there's a bit of air in it.

I thought the little captive nut think kept the air in, also aren't the presta pump valves designed to attach themselves to that captivue nut so is it pointless trying to pump the tyre without the captive nut bit?

Basically should I just get a new tube or is there a workaround?

He is replying to the OP and means to push on the tyre opposite where the valve is to stop it going in. If it goes in, where would you push to make it come back out again? Well push there during initial inflation. When there is air in the tube the air pressure will keep the valve from going in. The little screws at the base are entirely unnecessary, he doesn't need to go changing his tube.

As for you, Donfers, you probably need a new tube. Some tubes use replaceable valve cores but the cores are not sold separately AFAIK. If you have this sort you could take the core from an old tube. The core if removable is unscrewed below the captive nut. If your tube doesn't use a replaceable core you definitely need a new tube.

you could get tubes with longer valve stems - i did this on my bike
