Do not use WD40, only silicone oil or some of the 3 in 1 oil brands that are safe to use on rubber and plastics.

You can get 100%% silicone oils that are non airsoft branded for the same purpose for a quater of that airsoft price. Same job. :D

If its for pistol slides, or piston tracks in a gearbox shell, I find giving it a good rubbing with pencil graphite. (inside a slide's tracks, or the piston track, or other sliding parts. graphite is an excelent lubricant.

One thing to note is that airsoft-grade silicone oil is not as viscous as other stuff, such as the lidl silicone oil.

This makes the airsoft ones more suitable for smaller moving parts, such as the BBU's (blowback units), and valves etc, whereas the non-airsoft branded ones better for things like slides, trigger mechs, hammers etc.

You can buy ones non airsoft branded for such mechanical parts... stuff for remote control cars and planes works grand.

Virtually all lubrication oils are available in a range of viscosities, with the mid-range viscosity option being the "general purpose" option, and thereby being the most commonly found.
It's true to say that the likes of the 3-in-1 Brand silicon spray cans are the general purpose type, but if you have a look around you'll find equally sized cans of various viscosities for still a half to a third of the price of the "airsoft grade" (if there is such a thing) cans.

I'm personally blaming the likes of ASG on this one. While propane vs green gas is a different matter due to additives and removed components in the mix, ASG specifically market an airsoft silicon spray for an incredibly high price in a very small can. The mark-up on it's production must be phenomenal, and the vast majority of people don't know any better than to go with what the big-brand name says is the "proper" lubrication to use.
I know they're not alone in it, Abbey and a few others also do similar, but ASG's market penetration and even lower value product (Abbey's can is actually cheaper and contains more, though it's still not the cheapest alternative) means they're taking the less informed airsofter for a ride.
