When buying a car from England that is over 4 years old do you need to get the NCT done straight away or would a current MOT be sufficient? TIA

Must be done straight away, MOT has no legal status in Ireland. You get the car VRT'd and then you apply for the NCT, could be a month of a delay to get the NCT depending on what test centre you go to.

According to Irish Law you need to do NCT straight away.
Car is due NCT from the date of registration in Ireland.

Funny thing is, that you can't book NCT for few days after registering, and then waiting times are usually couple of weeks or even more.
Which puts you in the position, that you can't legally use your newly registered car for few weeks or even months.

According to European Comission such regulations are against European Law, and some countries where car had to be tested straight away after importing, even though it had the test from country of origin (like in Ireland) were forced to change their law after verdict from European Court of Justice.

If someone got really into that topic, and made a complaint about Ireland, to European Commission, the same change would be needed in Irish Law. But so far no one done it.

Thanks for replies, that is a bit of a pain having to wait. Paying the high VRT is sickening enough that I had not even thought of the NCT. Makes the process a bit less desirable

I drove for about 6 months in a UK import with correct tax and insurance but no NCT disk. Even at checkpoints the Gardai never batted an eyelid.

I imported a saxo vts about 7 years ago and drove it for 2.5 years with no NCT. Gardai never asked me about it any time I got stopped, as long as the tax was up to date it was grand.

I'm not saying you do that though!

I brought in a car last november and got it NCTd last month. Be aware that they back date the NCT to when it was registered so if you wait 12 months you'll only have 12 months left on it.
