Whats the general opinion on these?
Have my eye on this http://www.adverts.ie/car/sierra/sierra/ford-sierra-1-8td-new-nct-great-condition/612965

Hopefully going to have a look at it tomorrow, ive always loved the look of these cars and the fact that its a diesel is a plus. Anything i should look out for? I dont care about top speeds etc, once there is enough poke to overtake safely.

Havent seen one in years and years? I had a 91 diesel in 97. Is it a restoration/project car?

1700 is fairly saucy for it even though its very very clean. You would get much better bangeromics for that money.

You would get a 01/02 modern diesel for the same money. I would still like that Sierra though...:p

my oppinion is most serrias left on the planet are abused one with welded diff's and bald back tyres.
anyway if it straight honest car i still wouldnt buy she's way too over priced

Find out when it got the timing belt changed and the tensioners, they need changing every 36k and are prone to snapping before the 36k is up.

I would love that Sierra but not for that price. I'd probably look at that diff to make sure it aint welded as someone already mentioned. I also have the same opinion on probably most Sierras left have welded diffs and ragged until not much left. That one looks honest though:)

So the diff is the main thing to look at?

Im just swapping for my 318, im fed up having it for sale(dropped price to 2k last week) and would like a car ive loved since i was a kid. The fact that its a diesel is a plus too.

That 1.8 litre basic block was still available in Fords upto the end of last year, though heavily modified and updated over the years since starting out in the Sierra.

The ad on donedeal says its a turbo diesel.

It is indeed, it replaced the old Peugeot sourced non turbo 2.3d that the Sierra had prior to that. I think the 1.8TD had circa 75bhp which would have been good for the time, a diesel with a turbo wasn't all that common in that class of car back then.

I owned a succession of petrol Sierras until they were finally phased out. They were all excellent cars, but their one big problem was bodywork corrosion, particularly in the doors which would rust through from the inside out. The result was that what would appear to be a small paint blister actually revealed a hole right through the panel underneath. If I was thinking about one of that age I would look long and hard at the body panels and cills.

    Thanks for that!
