Urban Outfitters??? Of all shops I thought they would be pretty gay friendly.

I don't shop in Forever 21 since I found out they fund a lot of anti gay marriage organizations in America and I don't shop in American Apparel because I find their advertising offensive.

i dont do that regarding their lgbt practices specifically, moreso general human rights issues... I try and avoid anything mass produced in China because of their human rights agenda, but will buy from chinese based independent sellers from the likes of etsy, since i know my money goes entirely to them via paypal.

I find Urban Outfitters and American Apparal's CLOTHES offensive which is an even better reason not to shop there

Dominos Pizza's owner has some extremely right wing views.

Urban Outfitters did throw me as I think they target gay men in particular as their customer base, which really just makes it all the more repugnant.

Does anyone else have shops/businesses that they avoid because of their shady attitudes toward LGBT people? As an example, there's Urban Outfitters, whose Chairman funds anti-gay legislation while at the same time lobbies against pro-gay legislation. Just this week, Miley Cyrus (of all people!) called them out for it on Twitter : http://www.dose.ca/Miley+Cyrus+Urban+Outfitters/4862597/story.html

I don't shop in Urban Outfitters anyway because it wouldn't be my style but I wonder if there is a version of this list that is more relevant to Irish people?

Thanks for this. I would never in a million years have guessed that this company would be involved in such hateful organisations, I will never shop there again.

Fantastic and insightful post - really has me thinking about what else we don't know/are not aware of?

Nike and Apple are both very pro-gay :)

In what way? I think they should be commended for coming out (lulz) against Proposition 8: the marketing is a tad cringeworthy but I appreciate the sentiment behind it.

Domino's founder, Tom Monaghan, is known to fund some of those 'pray the gay away' camps as well as the Thomas More Law Centre, which seeks to litigate against opening marriage to gays ( as well as many other conservative ideals).

He doesn't own Domino's anymore, as he sold it in 1998 but he does have a large share in it. The current CEO has similar beliefs and is linked to a number of the same organisations as Tom Monaghan http://mapper.nndb.com/start/?map=3572

Coors beer is another company that has taken similar actions to Urban Outfitters

It tastes like muck, so I'm sure no-one buys it anyway.

unfortunately most stores will have chairpersons who support something you dont want to inadvertedly support by shopping there. or be involved in discriminative practices in some cases. outright carry out eg. animal testing.
so it'd be damned hard to shop completely ethically.
that doesnt mean i dont try. but its a 'ou pick your battles' type of thing.

i wont buy products tested on animals or shop in abercrombie and fitch because of a discrimination case some years back (girl with a prosthetic arm) - i try to shop fair trade where i can (although i question how fairtrade some things really are).... and so forth
to be honest i never even thought of anti-LGBT issues with shops....

My blacklist of shops mostly consists of places with crap/rude customer service. Similar to Aishae above, I'd have never considered a boycott based on beliefs of the head honchos.

It's not so much the personal opinions of the CEOs etc that annoy me. It's that I could, even in a very small capacity, be indirectly helping to fund things which I do not agree with at all.

I don't like the idea of that at all either. I guess what I meant above was that it had never occurred to me that a company would be funding such groups. Fortunately I'm nowhere near hip enough to shop in Urban Outfitters.

    WHAT!! :eek::eek:

    This is a surprise!

I never realized that I could be helping fund something like that just by shopping.. It's just crazy.

Look at the bottom of the bag next time you're in there, they have bible verses on them and they donate a lot of money to anti gay marriage Christian organisations.

The only problem is, if you keep looking for shops who have done something wrong, frankly I have nowhere left to buy anything.
