I had some bad experiences with the last guy who 'repaired' my laptop actually ran off to England with it. Well you can see why I want to get peoples impressions before I go to them. All I want is my old laptop cleaned inside (dear god it needs it) and then wiped clean, I would do it myself but this lappy don't come with a OS disc and to get one is around €25. For that I may as well send it in somewhere to get cleaned as well lol. So anyone have any ideas?

Hi, I can recommend myself for this job. I'm self-employed, fully registered and one of the cheapest around. See www.itek.ie

I currently give 20% discount off usual prices, so to install windows (clean, after formatting hard drive) + all important updates that's only 48 euro.

Cleaning a laptop inside cost only 40 euro after the discount. I disassemble it using professional tools and manufacturer's service manuals, then give it a good clean and replace thermal compound if necessary.

I can collect and return your laptop to your home/work or you can drop it yourself. It will be ready for the next day. Take a look at www.itek.ie for exact address and my phone / e-mail.

    Cheers,
    Peter

€90 for a 15 minute job, joking right?

Stripping down a laptop and rebuilding it is much more than 15 minutes. I do a few every week. Reinstalling an OS can be an hour or more by the time you get it nice and secure.

Installing an OS, drivers, updates, and software could take 2-3 hours.

About 30 mins to reinstall the operating system, 15 mins for drivers, 15 mins for software, and an hour or 2 installing updates.

That's the point I'm making. It's not 3 hours of hard labour.

It's 5 mins of actually doing something, 2 hours 55 mins of waiting for it to finish.

During which you're doing something else, so how do you justify such a fee?

It's charging for the knowledge of how to do it. Why dont you ask a solicitor about why he charges you €5,000 when your moving house all he has to do is open a word doc he has pre written, change the names and address, print it off and sign it. And if your going on the time end of it why do security gaurds in a shopping center get paid to stand around for most of the day when they spend maybe 5 mins actually going after someone.

That's not what I meant. You're paying for someone who knows how do it - I get that.

The point I was making is that in terms of computer problems, cleaning out some dust and re-installing is a very simple and basic task for anyone who's used to doing it.

The amount of times I've sorted out a friends/neighbours/relations computer for nothing other than thanks, I was just surprised that people would be charged that much.
