Travelling Italy

Thinking about going backpacking in Italy for two months in October/November, flying into Naples and out of Milan. Not counting flights, just wondering how much I should budget for the trip. Would be looking at getting interrail tickets to cut down on travel costs and staying in hostels to save on accommodation. Any advice would be much appreciated, thanks in advance.

You might want to reconsider interrailing. I am in Italy and train travel is so cheap here, it may cost less to just get normal tickets. The trenitalia.it website will normally only show you expensive express connections. But when you click the "all solutions" button on the bottom left of the results list, you will get the local trains as well - and those are about a third of the express train prices. For example, Turin - Bologna is €20, Turin - Verona is €17, Turin - Milan is €10...

Hiding the cheap trains under "all solutions" is sneaky. It gets even sneakier though: If you search more than about two weeks in advance, the website will claim that there are only express trains, even if you click that button. Only for journeys in the coming few days will it admit that there are cheaper options. Once you know that though, it is easy to get the right tickets and travel cheaply :).

I'm planning a trip of Italy, travelling by train, thanks for sharing that tip.
Think you just saved me about 80euro!

    Cheers
