I got no reply from RTENL re my Edision Argus but it has struck me if RTENL keep tweaking the codecs ie channel identifiers etc how can we buy any useful box eg vu+ or others??

Will a time come when RTENL can say that's it no more tweaks as everything works as they should?

Pretty annoyed they mucked up the argus mini.

Do RTE not have a plan to change to HE-AAC in the future? Would be interesting to see if that knocks any boxes off too..

There have been no changes in codecs as such - still H.264 on video and MP2 on audio. HE-AAC codec for audio is in the specification presumably for future use.

ps - I've posted info on your other thread about the EPG problems with the Edision. Nothing to do with codecs, though;)

I was wondering when they would broadcast their idiotic Nigerian Language flag myself. Maybe it was a few days back :)

Absolutely HE-AAC goes hand in hand with H264 video. I have been warning people for a while, so that we dont have even more I have no sound threads. Its bad enough that the Panasonic default to the narrative audio rather than english.

Whilst HE-AAC can be supported/upgraded through firmware it is at the box manufacturers mercy. They normally dont want to know.

@GBCullen - you do realise that RTE dont give a flying feck about your non certified box. Go to edision. The EIT being broadcast is standard.

May be odd, but it's used on Freesat as well. Occasional AC-3, but I haven't seen HE-AAC in use yet. I fear it will be used to further depress bit rates though:(
