I am considering buying a Skoda Superb 2008 (Old model) diesel. Any advise on what to look out for would be very helpful. There is a slight viberation from the steering wheel. Is that common with Diesels? I have only ever had petrol cars.

Any advise would be very helpful.

    I had a 2003 130 BHP Superb TDI

While it did have that great engine in the VW range I found a few things which didnt endear me to the car so i sold it

    1. Road noise in the car was terrible even though I replaced the tyres (continentals if i recall)This drove me mad

    2. I found that the road holding in the wet was poor at best (with new tyres as stated above) and even in dry conditions it could catch you out

3.The bland dash board annoyed me after a few months

I eventually got to a point that I hated getting into it to drive so i sold it.

I have spoken to many people who have had the same experience as myself and then many who never found these problems.Maybe it was only in the earlier production run of the mark 1 Superb but its just my honest experience

Find out when the clutch was done and the timing belt as these are expensive to get done

+1, Op, check the Dual Mass Flywheel on this before you buy.

Aside from it knocking or vibrating how can you check a DMF?

    Not really :P
Was just wondering is there some way of checking the DMF condition, I wasn't aware of any.

I just don't like them, they really do look like the cheap version of the passat from the inside. I would pop for the VW passat, or better still the octavia. As previous the DMF, not sure how you would check it but I would assume excessive vibration from the engine under load would be a sign. No way of checking the DPF as far as I know.

The rattle may be wheel balancing or a warped brake disc. In any case I would spend a few bob extra and get the 09 newer model. That model is around since 03 and looks kinda old at this stage.

Passat wouldnt be any better of a car either.

Very apt username by the way OP and you looking at a Skoda..:)

Do you have a link to it? Some can be good value for money.

    Which has the biggest boot?:D

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

Bought our second one last year and love them.
Never had a problem, fabulous boot, leg-room for back-seat passengers has to be experienced to be believed. Also looked at passat....over priced.

Not into mechanics, but we never had the slightest problem in eight years with our first superb and it's still going strong with pretty high mileage.

But But But But.... They've got timing belts !

They are the work of Satan !

Nice car though. Bigger than the A8 of the same era, arent they ?

I generally find Skoda's very rough over the road. Think their suspension isn't the same as their VW sisters.

I had an avensis and the superb seats and its level of comfort generally are vastly superior!! I changed to superb because of the comfort I experienced in my other half's superb.

My comparison was to a VW though.

Always found the VW to take rough roads with much more ease than Skoda.

Got my 2008 suberb in january, DMF fell apart 1 month later. full warrenty cover by Merlin Motors to be fair. They replaced the DMF & the clutch would have cost 1200 though. no problems since running perfect

Why not just go for the new shape model from the end of 2008?
