    http://edition.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/meast/05/29/us.saudi.prince.oil/
Saudi Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal said Sunday that he wants oil prices to drop so that the United States and Europe don't accelerate efforts to wean themselves off his country's supply.

Good news maybe? Our "friends" the Saudi's are working to make sure that our oil supply stays at a barely affordable level so we don't look too hard for alternatives :D

Feck mother earth, this was one of the main reasons I bought my EV!

Our "friends" the Saudai's have lot of investements in the West that rely on cheap oil to make money. So they don't loose that much from cheap oil.

High oil prices come from taxes, not the original price of the oil.

Lets see if this results in cheaper oil then.

Please quote the current levels of tax on fuel compared to say 5 years ago
    Excise
    Greenhouse
Vat is on eveything so don't get too worked up on it

and then explain why fuel is dearer than 5 years ago - remembering that the government would have to make up any shortfall in tax caused by people buying less fuel

Your EV that is powered by electricity produced from fossil fuels, and built using chemicals that are environmentally damaging to produce and dispose of?

14% of energy is produced from renewables in Ireland. Power produced centrally in large power plants is more more efficient than millions of small power plants (engines). As we bring more renewables on stream (or maybe nuclear some day) an EV gets cleaner as the power source gets cleaner. This is without modifying the car, the same is not possible with ICE cars. Batteries within a car like the Leaf contain many valuable rare earth metals, batteries can be recycled and this is likely to be the case for EV lithium batteries. Nissan states the battery in their EV will still have 80% capacity after 10 years, so it's not like they wear out quickly either.

*edit* I suppose I should mention that much of the interior is made from recycled plastic in my car (Leaf) and by virtue of the fact that it is a significantly less complex machine compared to a regular ICE car, it should be lower maintenance and have a much longer functional lifespan.

    How's your Leaf getting on?

It has mostly stopped being the cool new high tech gadget and is now just the family car. 2500 kilometers done so far, hopefully many more to go. My wife and I still love it and haven't had any issues yet. The next big thing is the 50kw fast chargers going up in the Topaz garages. A couple have come online in last few weeks, but there needs to be more so we can make some longer journeys. So far they are all around Dublin, but not halfway between anywhere (further away) that I want to go to :)
