Oooooh! Thank you for posting this! I've seen just the trailer where everything was so muddled. Great! And Barry is also there. Can't wait to start enjoying the new season!

Sookie journeys away from Bon Temps; Eric and Bill try to win back the human public; Jason learns that no good deed goes unpunished; Tara finds refuge in close quarters; Sam bonds with his own; Hoyt and Jessica debate the dinner menu; Jesus urges Lafayette to join a coven; and Terry tries to alleviate Arlene's fears about the baby.

I don't know. I'm almost ready to give up on True Blood. I didn't find anything particularly interesting about the first episode and truly, the majority of the story lines last season bored me.

Hopefully it will improved next week or the week after.

Great start to the season IMO!!

I guessed that Bill had become King (or some sort of authority figure) at the start when he was telling Eric what to do on Sookie's front porch!!

All credit to HBO for creating a storyline for Tara that doesnt make we wish she'd get slowly cooked to death.........Keep her and her friend alive as long as possible i say!! :D

I was so disappointed that Earl didn't make it past the first 15 minutes. True Blood could only be improved with a little Sheriff Buck.

Pretty poor first episode which, unfortunately, is carrying on from a pretty poor 3rd season. Not sure if I'll see this season out, but I'll give it another couple of episodes. I know it's about Vampires to begin with, but it's moving more and more into total fantasy and loosing the grittiness/coolness of the first and, to a lesser extent, 2nd seasons. There's also too many side stories going, most of which are uninteresting.

I would heart you for the American Gothic reference if I could.

I liked tonight's episode, especially 'new' Tara!

Excellent first episode. I hope they don't just let the fey story go - that could be an interesting battleline. Looking forward to more of this series.

I'm sorry but this has just become ludicrous!

From the horribly dodgy looking fireballs which looked straight outta 'Sliders' in the mid 90's to the ridiculous shot of a bunch of shifters running off as horses.

Ridiculous, cringey and horribly paced!

    Awful!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 420 ✭✭Clarehobo

They could have saved me 2 hours: 10 mins would have been enough if they had just put all the interesting scenes together...

    Humans:
Sad the only way they felt they could redeem Tara with the viewers was to make her a street fighter lesbian. Why did the good folks of Bon Temps get 12 months without her and we didn't? That girl is fair annoying. Whine, Whine, necromancy, blah... If she had an iota of sense she would have left the zip code the second crazy stuff got suggested. Here's hoping the dead canary kills her.

Arelene - I hope the baby kills her. She wrecks my head with her craziness.

And Andy is a v addict... Worst is I actually liked Andy and they have just made me hate him with the crap storyline. A storyline for the sake of writing him in. Why can't he just be a normal cop???

The main witch one is quite good. She did Eddie very well.

LaFayette - I always like that guy. Only one with any common sense.

Jason - pretty... Fast forward to the end of that storyline please! Pointless in the books and even more so on tv.

    Shape shifters:

    Yawn! Sam and Tommy storyline...yawn!
    Luna and Sam...yawn!

    Vampires:

Bill as king - I'm kind of annoyed Sophie-Anne was killed off. Her and Russell kept the vampire story lines interesting. Bill, as a character, is just boring and sneaky(but in a boring way). And obsesses over Sookie, in a boring way.

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Sorry! Just woke up. Fell asleep trying to remember what Bill did next! Oh yeah! He was a punk with eye liner and an English accent - how exciting! zzzzzzzzzzzz

Eric - I am convinced this guy is the only reason the series got renewed after last season: on the promise of all the crazy stuff he'll get involved in this season
    (i.e. banging Sookie)
. He has delivered in the first two episodes but I have a sinking feeling the writers are going to ruin him.

Pam - meh! She needs more lines/screen time. She is great on screen but she is a far better character than what they are using her for.

Jessica/Hoyt - honeymoon over... Don't really care! Don't get me wrong, I like the two of them but relationships get stale - no big news there!
And now they'll turn her into a supertramp to get more sexy Jessica underwear time

    Fairies:

Sookie - same as Bill. Learn some new tricks girl!

    ******************************************

    How to Fix it all!

    * make Andy normal
    * fast forward Jason's storyline
    * get rid of Tara for an actual year at least
    * make Arlene's nightmares come true
    * more Pam and crazy witch lady who can act
    * less Sookie/Bill
    * euthanise the shapeshifters or put them out to pasture in a land where we'll never see them again
    * give Jessica a job in Fangtasia
*...and if we are going to have to watch sex scenes can at least 50% of them involve Eric....

Totally agree with everything you've said here. The only reason I'm still watching true blood is because of the Eric storyline. And I adore Pam. I adore her in the books, and on screen. I really hope they give her more screen time this season (If I continue to watch it, anyway).

I didn't mind Tara's storyline, at least she's not whiny. That's going to end next episode of course. Ugh.

So bored with Jason and Andy (Though I found him quite amusing last season).. Please just kill them off.

And why do they insist on ruining Sam? He's a decent character in the books, and they're ruining him on screen.

A bit underwhelmed by the first episode which I watched last night. My OH was watching too, he hasn't seen any of the other series, but I'm always going on about how great it is. At the end, he just turned to me and said 'did you think that was good?'. Oh dear......

    What I didn't like:

Fairy land - all those people walking around in flimsy silky costumes reminded me of those really bad early episodes of Star Trek TNG when they'd visit a utopian planet where everyone frolics by streams and wear skimpy white clothes. Ugh. And of course the obligatory 'fairy resistance' helping the escape. Oh dear.

Shifters - agree that the 4 horses running from the house was cringey.

    What I did like:

Lafayette story looking good. Thought Fiona Shaw (Irish actress in case you didn't know) was excellent as Marnie, think this will be a good storyline.

Its only the first episode, fingers crossed it was just scene setting and will get as good as previous series.

After watching the second episode, the first one definitely seems like it was revising all the old storylines and laying the foundations for the new ones.

I actually didn't mind Arlene and the baby, thought it was interesting. The fairly story was cringy alright! Very strange seeing Fiona Shaw in it - I'm so glad they didn't go with the book storyline for Eric's curse, it would have been embarrassing to watch!

Episode 2 is only available on HBO GO right?

Episode 2 is available from the usual sources.

Episode 1 is ok. Not great, a few nice hints at future story lines but nothing really satisfying and most of all, no naked Eric.

Episode 2 is better, but I'll leave that for the other thread.

I thought it was a great start to the season. I would never judge a season by it's first episode, anyway; they need to build things up fr the next 11 or 12 episodes so it'll obviously be a little slow moving.

I like that Nan Flanagan is now a regular character rather than just a recurring one; always thought she should have gotten more screen time.

Fairyland was a little cringeworthy alright. But I gotta love how Sookie is finally reacquainted with Earl and then he's dead within 10 minutes. :pac:

Also quite liked the introduction of Marnie; I didn't feel like the Lafayette being a witch storyline was going anywhere but now I'm looking forward to it.

Watched it last night. It was ok, but nothing special.

The Fairy story was kind of redicilous. What the hell was with the fireball things?
Tara is a lesbian MMA figher now? Jeez, this is going to be fun
Always enjoyed Andy and Jason, but i don't like the Hotshot story.
Bill being King could be interesting, and Eric's story is always good.
Marnie was good, and Lafayette usually has interesting arcs.

Was that witch who went to Bills at the end not Sophie-Ann? She looked awfully like her i thought. Although surely a coven would know if a vampire was in their midst.

    Very unimpressed.

The Fae stuff was pretty cringey but I'm curious to see how they're going to continue the story.

I can just imagine the meeting the producers had about Tara "So people, everyone hates Tara. How can we fix this?" "Lets make her a lesbian!" "Hmm yeah! Lesbian can work!" "Hey, how about a cagefighting lesbian!!" "GENIUS!"

She's a headwrecking character that I'll be happy to see the back of.

Totally agree with the comments re: the shapeshifters and Jason. So boring. Nobody cares.

I like the Lafayette storyline though. It's the only thing really holding my interest at the moment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,980 ✭✭✭wyrn

Clairehobo, you summed episode 1 up perfectly. Completely agree with everything you said.

Now Tara was always a head wrecker but turning her into a street fighting lesbian. Lazy.

Sam, I really disliked last season and from the looks of it, this one too.

Fairyland - WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?! Complete nosedive.

Grandad Earl, I was gutted when I realised they'd killed him off with a glowing apple. Why, poor Sookie and Jason have lost so many people, it would have been nice for some company. I actually thought he'd stuck around to guide Sookie, but alas it wasn't to be.

I want to see way more of Eric and Pam (especially Eric!). I love their relationship.

I haven't seen episode 2 but I hope it picks up. It was a bit of a disappointment and I hope it's not as bad as it seems.

I wasn't overly impressed by the first episode either. Poor speed and storyline... it was a bit predictable and slightly boring.

I'm sure it'll improve, but not a good opener IMO...

True Blood is one of my favourite shows and I couldnt wait for this season to start.

    The 'fey' angle

I like that they've gone a different route from the books as it keeps a bit of mystery for those who have read the books. However, I found the first scene very dissapointing. It was overdone, badly explained and a little tacky. I love the mix of politics in True Blood, but surely it was too soon to show the ugly side and couldn't it have been done in a subtler way?

Bill- Im glad to see him King of Louisana, power and moral ambiguity suits him! Less of the mooning over Sookie I say.

Tara- Delighted to see they arent doing something horrible to the poor girl for a change. Yes shes whingey but by god is the woman tough! Glad to see her happy and kickin *ss. Lesbian angle was a suprise, but True Blood have always had themes of bias and prejudice so lets hope they treat this sensitively and its not for mere titillation.

Lafayette and Jesus- This is an intriguing development, joining the coven. I can see this tying in neatly into the witches v Vampires Battle. The head witch was absolutely amazing, her facial expression when she was posessed by Eddie was uncanny.

Eric- Im a huge Eric fan. Delighted to see more and more of him in the picture. I think there is a huge amount of chemistry there. His 'You are mine' scene should be really offensive to me........but it was really hot.

Pam- I love her. From the conservative 1950s skirt suit she wears to the lines she delivers with deadpan wit. She deserves far more air time than the likes of Arlene and Tommy....who are quite tiresome.

Jessica and Hoyt-I'd be glad to see Jessica move on. He's a sweetheart but that storyline is a little tired.

Sookie- I find that no matter how much I love a main character at the beginning I always find them irritating after a season or two. By nature the show revolves around them, and they are incredibly self absorbed. I'd like to see a bit more feistiness and a lot less crying over Bill.

Heres hoping.....they pull back on the Fey thing, True Blood is at its best when its in Bon Temps.

Eric brings out a better side of Sookie.

Theres alot more dialogue between Jessica and Hoyt.

    More of Alcide!

That they dont focus too much on Jason and Hotshot.

More politics, intrigue and twists showing you a suprising side of well loved characters.

That we finally get a decent villain like Renee from Season 1, none of this weirdness like Maryanne.

A return of Queen Sophie and her entourage?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,306 ✭✭✭ArthurG

    More of Alcide!

    Ideally sans shirt......

Overall, a "meh" from me. I thought the selling the house from under her feet was a crude plot device (I thought it would take longer than a year to have someone declared legally dead, as Jason would have had no title over that house (he owns their parents' house, while Sookie got her granny's house from her will).

However, the lesbo MMA fighter angle for Tara is the best arc she's had for the whole series, and having more of Nan and Pam around is a good thing.

I couldn't give a rat's ass for Andy / Lafayette / Jason / Sam / Arlene or Sookie for that matter.
