Job losses in Rigney Dolphin

Surprised there isn't a thread on this already.

    http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/finance/2011/0528/1224297948856.html
MOBILE OPERATOR Vodafone has decided to move two call centre operations from Ireland to Egypt and India respectively, and to outsource its debt collections to a third party here.

These moves will affect 45 staff at Vodafone and 139 employees of Rigney Dolphin, an outsourcing group that runs call centre activities on behalf of the mobile phone company.

These initiatives have been taken against a backdrop of falling revenues and declining customer numbers as the recession affects consumer spending.

Vodafone Ireland’s service revenues for the three months to the end of March declined by 6.2 per cent to €245 million.

Its average revenue per user fell to €32.30, a 10.5 per cent decrease year-on-year.

Vodafone has decided to move its mobile data services call centre from Ireland to an existing group facility in Egypt.

This function is carried out for the group by Rigney Dolphin and will affect 41 staff there.

The move is to be completed between August and October.

Vodafone’s mobile back office functions are being relocated to India, again to an existing group operation.

This will affect 27 Vodafone staff and 75 Rigney Dolphin employees. The switch will take place between October and April.

In addition, its debt collection operation, which has become more active in the recession as an increasing number of customers face financial difficulties, is to be outsourced to a specialist third party company in Ireland. This will affect 18 Vodafone roles and 23 Rigney Dolphin positions and the change will happen between September and November.

It is understood that Vodafone is currently in discussions with parties in relation to this contract.

Vodafone will continue to have more than 400 staff involved in other call centre activities in Ireland. In total, it employs about 1,200 staff in Ireland.

All affected Vodafone staff will be offered the opportunity to transfer to alternative roles within the company here. Voluntary redundancy packages and transfers to the third party debt collection service will also be offered.

I'm guessing most of those "affected" will lose their jobs, unless Rigney Dolphin manage to secure alternative business in the next few months, which seems unlikely.

I would guess it hasn't been mentioned because there is no notification that it effects waterford yet. Rigney Dolphin dosen't just operate in Waterford, it has operations in Northern Ireland as well.

I'm pretty sure the job losses are in Dundalk.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,079 ✭✭✭Gadgie

Oh, I see. The initial report on rte.ie claimed the job losses were in Waterford, though it appears to have been revised now.

Perhaps a mod can move this to the Louth forum.

Are Vodafone mad, every tried to deal with Three's call centre? I would advise against outsourcing to a different continent.

    I cancelled Vodafone anyway.

More job losses today in rigney dolphin that they don't want any media to know about leaving 16 people go this would bring the number in excess of 50 people since the start of the year and no media organization reporting on the job losses this needs to be brought to the attention of the media as they cannot get away with leaving people go without any warning and any redundancy payments.

This defo needs to be brought to peoples attention. People dont know whats going on in there. People with children, mortgages and rent found out today that they have a week before they will be left go.

No just getting rid of more people and the campaigns that they have in there have reduced there lines of service with them they did lose a number of small campaigns over the months. The company has gone down hill since the lost there biggest contract meteor all management have changed as most of them saw that they company did not have long left going forward and got out while they could

No never done last in first out got rid of the people coming up on 2 years service so that when the company goes bust which i can see happening very soon they wont have to pay any redundancy payments the company is a complete joke. All staff there now are full time they left go all there temp since December 2011

There just cheap and looking to let go of as many people as possible. Place will be closed down within the next few months. Delighted or them, because there dickheads. Pitty the staff tho, have terrible jobs for very bad money and to be treated like they do out there is beyond a joke. You have more freedom sitting in a school classroom. Cant even look cockeyed out in rigney dolphin or else youl get a disciplinary ! Ha, jokes on them!

It's true your nothing but a number in that place I seen it often enough, they don't care about any of their staff. Best of luck th the ones let go, it will probably turn out to be the best thing that ever happened you.

They gave me 3 days notice when they fecked me off. I'd say the place will be gone soon enough.

3 days notice? Is that even legal?

They just pay you the extra with your redundancy.

If the legal is a week they would have got 4 days extra pay with redundancy basically.

Last thing they want is 100 disgruntled employees on the phone for a forthnight waiting to be sacked.

A short term contract is a short term contract. I've been in this situation before and yes, it's not nice to receive such short notice, but they're within their rights, given that the contract was for a fixed period.

    TalkTalk all over again.

Why pay an Irish person 10-12 quid an hour when you can pay an Indian 1 euro an hour? Thats what your all up against.

Call centres like these have no future in Ireland. They might keep really small specialised centres that are a euro an hour to call in Ireland but centres with 100s of people doing first line work. No way.

Contracts are running out now bit by bit and giving companies the option to pull out..

Funny, other cities have successful call-centres with hunderds of people like Bioware, Amazon, Vmware etc.

Doesn't mean they always will. And both Amazon and VMware have more then just call centres here so they can't just pull everything out. I'm not sure if Bioware have much else but they seem happy for the moment.

Yeah. There not just full of 1st line low skilled agents. Them companies hire 100s of software developers and engineers. Theres no 3 week training course and your hired like TalkTalk and Rigney.

Also not to mention the 12% Tax band the multinationals are milking.

No beef per say, but they'd lead me to belive I was being made permenant. My next contract would have been a permenant one. Good money for someone just out of college though and I met a lot of lovely people so feck it.
