Monaco relegated

34 years in Ligue 1 ended tonight, relegated on 44 points. Only 11 points less than last season when they finished 8th. They were in a champions league final just 7 years ago with players like Evra, Giuly and Adebayor. If they can hang onto their players I'd expect them to dominate Ligue 2 next season, can't imagine Chu-Young and Adriano staying though.

That's some fall from grace, kind of Leeds-esque.

I just read this a few minutes ago. I was shocked!. I haven't followed Ligue 1 for a while so if you asked me where they were I would have guessed fighting for Europe :o.

They only conceded 40 goals all season ,crazy, but they only scored 36.
Fifth best defence in the league but relegated .

Them, Deportivo and Sampdoria relegated across Europe. All have produced some wonderful players on the European stage.

Yeah theres been a couple of shockers in Europe this season, Willem ll in Holland is another one, they have been top flight for 22 years or thereabouts. Depor was the most disappointing one for me, and Valderon is still there, so sad to see the great man relegated.

    Really sad to see

River Plate could be another big name to be relegated too

River Plate? Really, didn't think there was any chance of that.

Just after reading about it now. They looked certain to survive only a couple of weeks back. Draw tonight wasn't much good to them against their rivals.

yap their league is alot different then ours

tonights match was huge for them 0-0 at the moment

The argentina league is a three year relegation table based on averages of each season

Yeah I was aware of the system alright and I remember that both them and my favourite team Independiente were both in bother but it looked like Olimpo were gone only 3 weeks ago.

I cant find the overall table at the moment

I think one of the clubs are in the play off and the other the relegation zone

I think Olimpo are in the play offs at the moment

The ironic thing is headshot is that this complicated three year average thing was brought in in 1983 because that year River Plate finished 18 out of 19 and were due to be relegated but the Fa brought in the averaging system to sort it out.

To be honest I don't think the Argentine Fa will ever let River or Boca get relegated. They will change all sort of rules to ensure this doesn't happen. Argentine football wouldn't function without these two power houses. Nearly every club is insolvent.

Only six points separated eighth and 18th in Ligue 1 this year. Crazy stuff.

Depor got relegated with 43 points. Gutted, they are fantastic club, but maybe it's for the better. They've played some of the dirtiest and ugliest football in the league for quite some time now, but it does grind my gears that horrible clubs like Getafe stay up at the expense of well supported teams like Deportivo.

On a similar note only 4 points seperated 8th and 18th in Spain .

There was very only about 4/5 points between about 8 teams with about 6 games to go as well.

Strange that it is happening in 3 major leagues.

Quilmes cant be relegated I presume as if its calculated over three years they have only been in the top division two years? Daft. At present River Plate are fourth in the League but when you average it out over the last three years they could get relegated - totally daft system imo.

With regard to teams who have never been relegated - Bohemians are members of this unique club.

Anyway, no team has a right to a place in the top tier. Its good to see the mighty fall every now and again. It puts manners on them.

And replacing Monaco will be Evian-Thonon a club founded in 2007 from 2 local teams - having only been promoted to Ligue 2 last year.

Bixente Lizarazu is a shareholder in the club and at the start of last season he promised to run through the streets of Evian naked if they managed to get promoted

    Watched this game last night.

Lyon were too good for them in the end, albeit their 1st goal was lucky.
2nd goal from Lopez was absolute quality.

Hope Monaco are back in Ligue 1 this time next year :)

Its not looking good for River Plate to avoid a relegation playoff

TBH I think a lot of people in France will be happy to see Monaco relegated. They are not that much liked.
