2 questions on the NCT

    Hi Folks, any feedback would be appreciated...

    Can you fail the NCT from either of the following faults?

    a) rear wiper not working

    b) door lock not working (door closes/opens fine, just the lock is worn out with the key)

    a) no , dead rear wiper is probable in old FIAT's , will pass

    b) if you can lock and ulock the door from the inside it should pass


    best to download the nct manual to check the exact wording

    Why would it matter if you can lock the door or not? I am genuinly asking here as I never thought the NCT crowd gave a damn if you can lock your car or not.

    I suppose if you couldn't open the door, then they might fail you.

    If in doubt, go to Fonthill NCT. Shouldn't have any problems.

    DOOR/LOCKS/ANTI-THEFT DEVICES
    Method of Testing
    Examine the general condition of all doors.
    1. Open each door and check the security of catches and receivers.
    2. Close the door and, without using the handle, note whether the door primary and secondary catches hold the door closed.
    3. By opening and closing each door note whether the door pillars are sound (see Item 35 for reasons for failure).
    4. If the vehicle is fitted with sliding doors examine the condition of the runners and tracks and actuating mechanism.
    5. Check that the steering lock is not fouling the steering mechanism when the ignition is switched on.
    ITEM
    Doors
    REASONS FOR FAILURE
    1 A door missing.
    2 Door cannot be shut or opened normally
    or is liable to open on its own.
    3 Insecure receivers or catch.
    Sliding Doors
    4 Runners, tracks, or actuating mechanism so defective
    that the door does not open or close properly.
    5 A door missing.
    6 Safety devices not working or defective.
    Steering Lock (where originally fitted)
    7 Excessive wear or jamming of lock/barrel/
    key mechanism of a steering lock.

    so the answer is no, just no, the lock doesnt have to work at all

    I had my nct on my '94 Corolla last week, mechanically everthing sound with the car running, but it was failed by the tester for a fault with the lock.

    Basically a few years ago the lock ceased up and it was brought to a mechanic who fixed it but over time the lock became loose - in order to open the car from outside you would need to hold the key turned in the lock in order to open the door - as soon as the key was removed from the lock it would slip down back into place.

    It has passed one if not two ncts in the meantime, it was an annoyance, but something we didnt bother to get fixed given the work involved. The door always once locked would stay securely in place, no issues there.

    I said to the guys face when he showed me the reason 'doors cannot be shut or opened normally' that i thought he was really stretching the interpretation past what was intended. The door closes and opens smoothly and securly. If anything the door is more secure by locking itself!
    TBH the guy looked a little embarrassed, but he was not for turning.

    The testers arguement is that if there was an accident and i needed to exit the car fast, or the fire brigage needed to enter the car, i would be at risk. I would think if i couldnt get a door open that i wouldnt be in much condition to be able to exit the car!


    Anyway I know some may say given the age of the car to just buy a new one, but its been in my family for years and is still running smooth - better the devil i know etc.

    So...Do ye think i should appeal this decision or am i just being stubborn and should pay a few hundred to get the door stripped and the lock fixed?
    (Apologies to mods if this is seen as off topic, i see it as a continuation of point b of the OPs post)

    Surely it wouldn't be a few hundred. Get a lock and key from a scrapyard or ebay.

    Appeal it, It doesn't mention the lock in the nct handbook
