Overcharged for fitting thermostat in car

    Hi

I have been quoted €238 to fit a new thermostat in my car. The price of the thermostat is approx €30 and labour is apparently l hr. This is being charged by a main dealer. It seems excessive to me. Has anyone else had this type of work done and how does the cost compare?

You owe it to yourself to try elsewhere. I bring my car to a guy who works for a main dealer but does nixers at weekends from his own home.

Ya can't bate word of mouth.

You don't give any details on the car but that price is too high for a non-specialist job (unless cam locking tools are needed to get the timing belt off to fit the stat). If the price is the issue stick a thread in the Motors section - most folks will warn you away from main dealers unless you really have to use them.

There are plenty of reasonably priced mechanics in Galway - ring around or try Kilduffs on Nuns Island.

    Hi

Many thanks to the first two replies, you have been most helpful. I have taken your advice and found a much more affordable price with another garage.
