Vibrations Steering Wheel

Just had four tyres replaced on the Mrs car on Saturday. When I was on the motorway this morning, I noticed a slight vibration coming through the steering wheel at about 107km/h.
Does anyone have any suggestions what's wrong?

Did you get tracking and balancing done when you got the new tires?

The balancing was done, I saw them sticking it on that machine and adding these weights (whatever they're called)

I wonder is it a slightly buckled rim. Before it was no the back axle and now its on the front after getting tyres changed or else got damaged when you were getting the tyres changed?

I just looked it up on internet, seems its the balancing. I'll get them to re-balance the wheels again.
Mods you can close this thread.

Hold on there a sec OP!

If you got new tyres the wheels would have been balanced at the time so imbalance shouldn't be a problem. There's a possibilty that there's a sizeable buckle in the wheel but again the fitter should have realised same and pointed it out.

Could well be warped brake discs - does it happen all the time at this speed or only when braking?

Plenty of places don't balance properly because of the guy doing it or their equipment is crap, or both. There's also the possibility he threw a weight at some stage later, you wouldn't really notice that happening.

Fair enough - what I'm saying is imbalance isn't the only possible cause of wheel vibration so it's worth considering.

OP - since you just paid for new tyres do insist they are rebalanced but if the problem persists then the discs will be the next thing that need to be looked at. Again, if the vibration occurs when braking only it is more than likely the discs.

Agreed there are many possibilities, start with the cheap and simple fixes and work from there.

1.5 year ago I was putting winter tyres on my car before very long journey to EU.
Guy in the garage balanced them, and all seemed to be fine while I was driving on local roads in Mayo.
Next week (just a day before a journey) I had to go to Dublin. On motorway at speeds between 120 and 130km/h the steering wheel was shaking like hell.
I came back to that garage that evening, and made sure he balanced them again properly. All 4 wheels were exactly balanced to 0 on their machine - he told me that there's no chance that steering wheel will be shaking now.
I set up for journey next morning, and now at any speed above 110, up to 150km (or more - I don't know as I didn't check in Ireland) the steering wheel was shaking very much.
I thought that I'm just about to do over 2500km journey, so before the ferry I had a while, went to some different garage and got my front wheels balanced again. After it the shaking disappeared completely at any speed up even up to 200km/h.

Thanks for response. Under braking is not a problem, it just seems when I hit a certain speed. I'll go back later in the week and get a re-balance done. If that fails to solve the problem, I'll get it balanced some where else.

ARe you allowed to name the garage?

The problem could be the tyres themselves, you could have RFV (radial force variation) with one or more of the tyres, this problem won't show up with conventional wheel balancers.

Seems lilkely the balance alright. Some places seem to do it very well, while others not so good. Did they do all 4 wheel balancing or just the front 2?

Just back from getting things fixed. Yep, the balancing was way out. Strange because I saw them doing it originally. Test drove it and all fine.

Hey guys - same problem here. My 307 shakes when you hit the 120 KPH mark. Had them balanced but it still seems to be an issue. Think I should get it done again?

Yes, throwing weights is quite easy on irish roads.

    I don't think it's against the rules.
It was Pat Conway's Autocare in Knappagh (between Westport and Leenane).
