    hey

I got a loan of my grandads fm2 to muck about with and i got some neopan 400. Its my first roll of film, i got it last week and i've shot about 13 with it so far. Theres no rush to get the camera back to him so i think im going to use the summer to come to grips with shooting film.

So far i've seen neopan and tmax(a friends), but im stumped as to where to find a good comprehensive list of different films and images of what they tend look like.

So... i was just wondering what you guys are using and what film types you're into right now? Images would be cool with what film used etc

    cheers

There's dozens of Flickr groups for different films. It's worth a look through if you want to see what other people are getting from it. But more importantly, what type of film are you after? What results would you like?

nothing in particular, what ever im feeling like on the day or what not I guess. I dont like the b&w conversions that i produce on my dslr, so i got neopan. That way I've no real say in the matter.

Well (imo) go get a selection of film, a roll of 25iso, 125iso, 400iso, and 1600/3200iso in black and white and see what you like. You'll probably find you'll settle on 2 or 3 different films that you like.

I love using Rollei 25, but it's so slow I don't get around to it too much. Tmax or HP5+ are my favorite 400iso's and Ilford's 1600 offering is another favorite of mine.

With colour negative, I like Portra 400 & 800, Fuji's 800 col-neg too. Out of convenience, I'll often use the Fuji 200 speed free film. Colour transparency, I like Provia 400F.

It's all about what colours, contrast and grain you like though :)

if you take indoor portraits, delta 3200 has got really nice grain.

bear in mind that slide film is less forgiving when it comes to exposure error that negative film is.
    i'll second fajitas's thumbs up for HP5.

Love love love HP5 - You can throw anything at it :) Like Fajitas said though, just mess about. My pixie is mostly film, and most of the shots are tagged with film types if you want to have a look through. They're home Dev'd though, so that can change the look of film enormously.

Kodak portra 400 pushed to 3200. I pushed a couple rolls to 3200, which means I rated it as if it was 3200 iso, and pushed it 3 stops in the developing (to compensate for underexposing 3 stops). The results are amazing, unfortunately I have no scans.

Choosing the same film as used by other photographers whose images appeal to you, doesn't mean you'll get results like theirs. You would also have to use their metering technique, development proceedures etc, etc. There are so many variables involvved.

Just pick one or two different speed films and stick with them for a while until you get to know what they can do for "you".

Its more to do with the photographer than the film.
