Sony EPG giving information on today's game. Also congrats to Saorview on the Magner's League Final HD broadcast last night. Hope everybody enjoys the hurling today.

yea,,, looking forward to this after the rugby yesterday also.

    so far tho,
the studio yesterday for the rugby looked like better HD quality than whats happening now,
or maybe i'm just imagining things:confused:

Sunday Game has started. Studio broadcast is in upscaled SD. So only Cork V Tipp itself will be in HD.

That's because the 'studio' for the rugby match was in Thomond Park, and would have been all part of the OBU done by Observe (you could see their uplink truck behind the goalposts in some shots.). Whereas the studio for the GAA stuff is in Dublin and covered by RTÉ in SD.

The required RTÉ 2 HD playout system will enable the transmission of live and recorded events in native HD. All of the existing RTE 2 SD content (i.e. programmes, commercials, studio inserts etc.) will be up-converted to HD for transmission, and transmitted around the native HD events. In effect the Pres schedule and all programme content will be identical on RTÉ 2 SD and on RTÉ 2 HD, with different quality pictures being presented on each service.

The system will be engineered with a view to ensuring that there will be, no additional studio production or Television Presentation operational costs and the proposed new service will have no impact on the RTÉ 2 SD service. The Scheduling department will include extra information in the RTÉ 2 schedule, at the times when the live HD contribution feeds are available. This will enable the true HD signal to be inserted into the output of the RTÉ 2 HD service. Graphics and sound will be added to the signal automatically from one production studio. It is planned that the service will carry a new logo/bug ‘RTÉ 2 HD’ and also a short animation will be played, probably a lower third super, on handover to the live event.

Watching bits of the rugby yesterday, there was a share of artefacting at times. Wonder if this is a problem with the encoders or a result of limited bandwidth or both?

Was waiting to take a pic of it, but it didn't happen. The rugby yesterday had an almost full screen intro with "available in HD on Saorview" (didn't have the camera to hand at the time )

The first two live HD events have been from Limerick and Thurles, I'm surprised the Dublin/Offaly game wasn't included considering it was so close to RTÉ Dublin 4.

Down to logistics maybe, same OB unit at the two venues relatively near each other?

The switch between HD and upscale was obvious at the end of the game, which is a good indication of the difference between the two.

Well I'm a fan anyway,it was a superb demonstration of the quality of HD in sport broadcasting.

It was just as good as rugby, hurling alot faster and maybe not as easy to notice.
