Apologies if this has been covered already but I'm looking for a quick answer.
I was setting one of these up for a customer so they could watch UK freeview and ROI soarview. The box found both transmitters and tuned each Tx's channels but made me choose which region I wanted ,ie Either Freeview or Saorview but wouldn't let me have both. The box is the 2010 version. Is there any way I can make it tune both Tx's without having to pick one over the other?
    All replies greatly appreciated.
    Cheers Gerry.

By region do you mean an ITV region...eg Ulster/NI ?? This would be understandable behaviour.

Message on screen was something like 2 regions are available:RTENL and Freeview N.Ireland. Which version do you want? or similar language but I couldn't select both, It was one or the other.Any other Freeview HD boxes I have installed before have simply tuned all services both ROI and UK and there where no manual tuning options I could find :(

Any what happens when you pick a region. Hvae you checked if it saved the channels for the other region in the 800s?

Was the box bought in Tesco in Ireland ? How do you know its the 2010 version ? whats the model number?

Tesco have started stocking freeview boxes here recently and I have been wondering what happens when you run the install. I wonder has the firmware been modified to make then more saorview compatible before they went on sale here? maybe that is why you are getting the region options coming up.

If you pick RTENL do the saorview tv channels get numbered as channels 1-8 ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 91 ✭✭gerrymartin

If I pick RTENL option then it only installs the saorview channels and if I pick the other option then only the Freeview. I think it still numbers the Saorview channels in the 800's if i install only the RTENL option. The box was bought from Tesco direct website(UK).
I will look for a link to the box and post it here.

    1. There are 3 different Technika "Freeview HD" boxes, one is a Vestel and one is a Chinese noname, can you post a pic please?
    2. Having selected NI and tuned the NI channels is there any way to add 'other channels' whether automatically or manuallly or does the box resolutely refuse to tune these supplementary Saorview channels no matter what you do.?
    3. If the answer to 2 is a No have you told Tesco not to sell these in border / overspill areas ( like Kent in England) untill they fix the bug and issue new firmware to affected users ??

Yes that is the Harvard box from 2010 alright but you could still get them in some Tesco stores recently.

My parents have the other 2010 Technika box made by Vestel. As they're way outside the freeview broadcast region that box was never going to ask you to make a region choice when it was being installed. So I never came across that problem.

You need help from someone else with a Technika box from around the border region I think.

That is the Harvard not the Chinese one Gerry. See this post.

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=71762103&postcount=60
The stbhdv 2010 is a vestel (similar to walker, but not the same, thanks stb for info ).
The stbhdh 2010 is a harvard (similar to grundig, goodmans and alba).
The stbhdis 2010 is the chinese one. (no clones that i know of.)

The Chinese one (stbhdis2010) is the one they are most likely to sell here seeing as they appear to have largely sold out of the other ones.

Anybody know how to manually tune this particular model?Or indeed does anyone know definitively if it can be done?
    Cheers,Gerry.

I bought one for someone needing a cheapie box to pick up Saorview (no Freeview in their area, only Saorview). I don't see any way of manually tuning in a channel - it's all or nothing! And no way to select both NI and ROI muxes at the same time.

I think I'll say in its favour (the Harvard box is the one I bought) - it can hold a channel even at very low signal strength. My old Wharfedale DV832B can't hold a signal in my kitchen due to poor cabling in the wall but the Harvard box didn't break up once .. with 9% signal. However, if you want a box that gets both Saorview and Freeview, this is not one to get.

The Harvard box your customer has can not do manual tune. Of the 3 Teknika HD boxes this is the one to avoid.

Maybe I was just lucky, but I have not found a problem either manually tuning the STBHD 2010,or picking up RTE and Freeview UK both in HD.
I actually prefer this model to a later one I bought(Now back up to £60) in Newcastle Co.Down.
This model runs from a 12dc ,11 Watt supply which means it will fit into my Dab/12v/Solar system.
I recently was able to find sig strength and quality on the menu,to help with tuning Ch44 and 47 Cairn Hill Tx.

Think I recall picking up Channel Zero, perhaps from Caldbeck?.No vision and no download ,but it appeared to be on the EPG. Tesco box didnt see any info.

Does 'traditional' (WST) teletext work on these Tesco Technika "Freeview HD" boxes ?
Either on the box itself or on the TV's own teletext?

(TG4,TV3 and 3e only have traditional teletext services on Saorview)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,688 ✭✭✭winston_1

WST does not work on the Vestel version and I doubt if it works on the others though I have not tried them.

For a box that does WST and MHEG 5 go for the Icecrypt T2200. This was on Tesco's website for just under £60, not sure if it still is.

It will do WST on the box itself or on the TV via a scart. Note teletext is not sent over HDMI so you wil lneed to use the boxes internal decoder.

"This" STB box works on UK and Saorview text via hdmi out.
    Technika STBHDIS 2010.
    110/240v 9w China

Yes, that is part of the Freeview HD spec. But Antenna's questuin referred to world service teletext and my reply still stands.

Sorry for my confusion, can confirm your findings, but not sure what you mean,re hdmi?
If hdmi is selected on my tv the text(from the box) still works,I think thats what you are saying.
I bought the box from Tesco some weeks ago for £30, but saw it at the weekend in the store where it had gone back up to £60?
It seems to have a problem in that sometimes it will only O/P audio and requires a reboot to restore vision, must investigate more.

OK let me explain. The text used in the UK and on RTE is the newer MHEG5. This can only be decoded by your set top box and then sent to your TV via scart or HDMI. You can't get it by pressing your TV's remote text button. The older style traditional teletext or world service teletext, sometimes incorrectly called analogue text, is still used on TV3, 3e, and TG4. UK boxes generally can't decode this or send it to your TV. But the Icecrypt T2200 and Saroview approved boxes can and will then also display the results on your TV via scart or HDMI. In addition it can be decoded by your TV's teletext decoder by using your TV's remote, but only when using a scart connection, not HDMI.

Thanks for taking the time to clear that up for me,for a moment I was begining to think the Foreign Office had a hand in the World Service text.
