Psychology query from a 6th year.

    Hey guys!

I'm a current 6th year student, and I'm looking into studying Psychology. I know in Maynooth that there's three ways to study it:

    1) BA Psychology
    2) BSc Psychology through Science
    3) BA Joint Honours

Is that right? And if so, what's the difference between the first two?

And I understand that you have to be in the top 30 of your class to get into 2nd year Psychology from the BA Joint Honours degree, but is that extremely hard to do? And once you get in, will your degree be accredited by the Psychological Society of Ireland? Or are they all accredited?

    Thanks a million. :)

I'm also going to NUIM to do Psychology next year.
As far as I know Psychology through Arts and pure Psychology are accredited by the PSI, not sure about Psychology through Science though.
I think the reason its difficult to make it into the top 30 of Psychology is because pretty much every student taking the joint honours will work their arses off to get Psychology in 2nd year. I know I will.
Good luck anyway dude, hope to see you there next year.

Thanks! :) Best of luck to you too, hope the LC goes well for you!

I've only even started thinking of Maynooth recently, I had my heart set on Limerick, but then it dawned on me that I probably wouldn't enjoy the course there, so I'm broadening my options now. :)

I think the only difference between Psychology through Science and the others is that you do science subjects with Psychology in first year instead of arts ones, and you automatically get in to pure Psychology.

And contrary to popular belief, a lot of people who pick Psychology in first year won't be interested in keeping it on - they might just do it for the craic, or find out they don't actually like it or whatever. I know a girl who was offered pure Psychology for second year but didn't do it because she preferred her other subjects :) Obviously if you want to keep it on you will need to work hard, but it's not like all 400 people who do psych in first year will be fighting for those 30 places.

Yeah I looked up the Science one a bit more, and it's definitely not for me, it's a bit too Science-y! :P I'll look into the Law and Arts degree and see would it be possible to do Psych that way though as Law's something that'd probably interest me a lot too. :)

I think you're only able to do one subject that has restricted entry to second year in first year, so you would have to pick either Psychology or Law. It's like that cuz if you didn't end up getting into the top 30 you'd still have to have two subjects to do for your degree. That's what it's like through Arts anyway.

However, if you got into one of the denominated degrees (i.e. Psychology/Law through Arts) it might be different because you would have an automatic place in second year for those subjects, but if you wanted to change over to the other one and had the marks to get into it for second year it might be okay... You should maybe email the admissions office and see what the story is with that - their email is admissions@nuim.ie

Yeah I just looked under the Law and Arts degree and it turns out you can't take Psychology with it, there are a few subjects you can't take with it!

But then looking at the BA Joint Honours degree, there are so many amazing subjects to pick from anyway! It's like an overload of them! I'd work my ass off to get Psychology anyway, and *hopefully* I might get into pure Psychology in first year! :)

Arts is a great course ;)

If you don't get into pure Psychology after first year but still really want to be a psychologist or whatever, there's diplomas you can do after your degree that allow you to get the equivalent of a Psychology degree. Think they do them in Galway and Trinity.

    Oh cool! :D

I'll hopefully have HEAR anyway so I might get in on the reduced points basis if there isn't a huge amount of people with HEAR after applying for Psych!

Omg Noel you're so quick at replying :pac:

If you get into Maynooth and you're on HEAR, I could be your leader on the orientation week :p

    I'm not! :P I just type quick!

    Aah seriously? I'd be all like "Hi YTH, I'm Noel2k9 >_> <_<"

And also this whole "The Gathering" thing looks epic..

NUIM for the win. I'm gonna change my CAO and put this first.

I'm also going to attend the University day on 25 June! :D

Just to clarify, all 3 routes are accredited by the PSI.
