Engagement ring damaged - Rhodium plating??

Does anyone have any experience/knowledge with the Rhodium plating process. I have had my engagement ring done before and afterwards thought I saw a clamp like mark on the ring (it isnt very noticable so I didnt follow up on it). Yesterday I dropped my ring set off again to be done (2 years after last incident) and when I got home I noticed that the setting seems to be damaged as if there is a cut on it. Basically I have one main diamond claw set (princess) with 3 diamonds set into the band either side of this. It looks like the setting on the smaller diamonds is cracked as when I rub something across it, it appears to "snag".
I rang the shop and they told me that they would have only put the ring in a plating bath and then buffed it so there isnt anything in the process that would have damaged it .... I know for a fact the damage wasnt there before I dropped it off but I am dreading going back into them to tell them this as I know they will probably say it was. The ring was custom made (another country) and I dont have any recent close up photos that would show the ring without this damage - I am just SO upset as it was an expensive ring.
I suppose what I am asking is wether or not there is anything in the rhodium process that may have caused this??

Look at a you tube video on how they do it. I'm not sure myself other than there is a lot of chemicals used in the process. I wouldnt have thought it was the oricess itself but possibly they dropped it and cracked one of the claws. Best to get fixed anyway. Cost to get fixed would be a fraction the cost of the diamond you could possible loose as a result.
