Its very out of date calling a show late late that starts at 9.30 and finishes before midnight Isnt in ? Its sounds very 1960s catholic Ireland.

It's a misconception to think that 9.30 pm was considered 'late late' when the Show started.

When the Late Late Show was first broadcast it started at about 11.30pm, that's where the name comes from.

It was very popular and soon moved to the current slot.

And no, they shouldn't change the name, it's a hugely popular brand and TV3 would take the name for a rival show if RTE abandoned it.

Didn't they try something like the late late a number of years ago with Eamonn Dunphy? IIRC, it only lasted about 13 episodes.

Twas only an hour long when it began in 1962, the Dunphy Show on TV3 was a through-going disaster. Brendan O'Carrolls show is probably the sort of thing that channel should try but I guess its too late now.

And how did they manage that? Didn't RTE used to shut down for the night at around that time.

The show, originally conceived as a temporary summer filler programme for a niche audience on Saturday nights at 23:30, began broadcasting on Friday nights in 1962 and was presented by Gay Byrne for over 35 years, on Saturday evenings for some of that time.

    According to wikipedia

in the early to mid 80's, i remember it was on at about 10.30 on a saturday night, then it switched to 9.30 on friday nights in the late 80's/early 90's.

Yeah I agree that the name should have gone.. It's very different from what The Late Late Show was.. It's effectively just like a 2 hour infomercial at this stage....

My alternate names for next season's show would be:
    - The Boring Boring Show..
    - A Party Political Broadcast On Behalf Of Fianna Fáil
    - Stick Man's Illness Hour
