Macbook bought last year, Apple saying there's only a 30-day warrantee

    Hey guys, I recently had a problem with a macbook 13" where it wont start up from what seems to be a hard drive problem. I rang Apple to explain the situation a couple of weeks ago and to my surprise they told me that they now only had a 30 day warrantee and wouldn't pay for it to be fixed.


    Now when I bought it there was most definitely a year's warantee and I'm pretty sure in the EU electrical goods essentially have a two year warrantee despite what a retailer may say.

    So what should I do? Does anyone have any tips for dealing with this situation?

    Always thought Applecare was one year standard. This doesn't help you, but an Italian Regulatory agency are taking action against Apple for selling Applecare when it overlaps the EU 2 year warranty requirements.

    Call em back and insist on your rights. Ask to speak to managers etc and generally be a pain in the ass til you get what you want

    Edit: do keep us informed...I was thinking to upgrade but such a change in policy would make me reconsider

    Cheers for the replies. Opinion guy, I have to say that the support is really hit and miss. When it's good it's great but when it's not it's terrible!

    I'll get onto them and update with what happens..

    Well I have had apples for a number of years and the support has always been excellent. Replaced a bunch of stuff for me no questions asked. But if you are telling me that has changed I'll have to reconsider. Then again I can't bear the thought of windows so what are ye gonna do ??? :P

    I think you might have misunderstood. Unless you have AppleCare, there's only 30 days free telephone support. You probably gave them the impression that you needed technical support rather than repair/replacement. You need to be clear that your machine is faulty and in need of repair. What number did you ring? Did you buy the Mac from Apple? It might be better bringing it to an Apple Authorised Service Provider.

    The EU 2 year thing doesn't apply here. That was only a directive and when it was translated into Irish law they left out the 2 year bit because (supposedly) they felt the Irish Sales of Goods Act already gave sufficient protection. Technically it does, but it's far more vague about the time frame. It should also be emphasised that it only applies to resellers. Manufacturers have no obligation to help you under the law. The 1 year warranties they provide are voluntary and are designed to take the weight off resellers, which is why many of them have started offering 2 year warranties in Europe.

    you can send your machine to apple authorised service centre and with your pop i think they can solve this issue . you can check with evad it solution in dublin

    Yes I would agree you should at least have a 1 year warranty on your Macbook currently

    Ah! It was actually my girlfriend who was talking to them and not me, I just used the first person for simplicity. Anyways I think you're right, it makes perfect sense that she might have been mixed up.

    One last thing, I'll be bringing in a new macbook pro my mother bought for repair to the compuserve shop in Dublin, can I just bring in the other macbook also without ringing apple again or do I need the all-clear from apple tech support first?
