I would like to get a Sat Nav so was hoping from some advice from those of you in the know.

Which one to get and which ones are easy to update and also which ones to avoid.

Yep I am female and not too good at map reading:o

I picked this one up a couple of months ago. It's a brilliant little thing, as thin as an iPhone and really light. Very fast processing directions and has free traffic updates for life. It's pricey enough, but very highly rated.

Looks great, how much do the updates be for these?

Note that that poster lives in the UK, the traffic subscription probably accounts for a major part of the cost of that unit so it would probably not be a good buy for someone living in Ireland (26 counties).

There is a GPS forum with lots of advice for someone looking for info....

I'm not sure how much of the cost the traffic part accounts for, and even outside that feature (which I can't use in Jersey anyway) I'd still recommend it, purely for the ease of use, performance and portability of it.

I'm not sure how much the updates are but you get one full free update as part of the deal, which has to be used within 60 days, so it works out well. The unit comes with Europe fully mapped, which is great when travelling abroad.

Fair enough but that looks like an expensive unit if all you want is basic navigation. For example this unit is also widescreen and has maps of all of Europe for only Eur 81 ..

Garmin offers one-off and lifetime updates, the lifetime updates apply to one unit by serial number. When you buy a Garmin unit you can get a free map upgrade within 60 days of the first time you get a satellite fix.

Why not just use an iPhone or other phone with GPS?
I find the iPhone NavFree app particularly good ...

+1 most of the newer Nokia Phones come with it as standard and have free updates for life.
