Fat kids in school

Twenty years ago I had at most 2 fat kids in my class.

If you looked at those fat kids, what are the chances that they had fat parents, and not athletic ones?

How many kids have fat friends in class now?

I (reluctantly)appreciate that the "fat" gene may exist but also appreciate that the lazy, fat git exists.

Everything that happens in the USA,comes here 10 years later.

Bottom line.Fast food+poor parenting+computergames-exercise= ADHD(overdiagnosed as its the lazy option)for a kid who doesnt exercise enough or who is a bit clever)..... and fat wee, lazy bastards

    Its the pedo's fault.
They hang around schools and throw burgers and sweets into the yard...over time the kids gain weight, thus not able to run far and are easily caught.

    May not be true

Maybe you should volunteer for some after school activity when you finish. It's not like you're working after 6pm or even 5pm

Take them training for GAA maybe
Get a school team going, enter blitzs and competitions

    Here's the reason OP.

When we were in school (ok im 30)..we had sanwiches in tinfoil...a capri sun....and a 54321 bar if we were lucky. If we were really lucky we could get a pound special from the chipper on a friday.

Nowadays kids are getting their lunches from dominos, chinese restaurants, filled rolls filled with all kinds of meaty ****...all washed down with a bottle of coke.

When we came home from school we threw our bag in the hall and ran out for a game of world cup. we played for three hours and then came home with grass stains on our grey trousers.

The kids now come home after having their chicken fried rice for lunch...have another slap up meal...and then spend the night on facebook and on the xbox.

I know I shouldn't respond to trolls, but here goes...
The 'fat' gene you're talking so loosely about is a glandular disorder, an over production of growth hormones and underproduction of thyroxin which essentially gives a low metabolism, meaning less digestion.
Secondly, ADHD has never been blamed for kids being fat. ADHD is, as it says, a hyper active disorder that limits attention span. Nothing to do with weight gain.
Yes, there is more of a need for healthier eating habits, but again you have the problem of eating disorders. The way you act so insensitively towards the problem means that if you tried to talk with someone who suffered from obesity about it, you'd make them feel worse; Leading to a worsening eating disorder, etc.
Basically... Keep your stupid opinions to yourself, please.

What were the rates of this glandular disorder say 30 years ago compared to today?

I dunno. I'm not a doctor or anything. I'd say it'd be about the same. Yes, children today are suffering from obesity, for the most part, because of parents. But this rant that this guy's going on about? It's pretty disgraceful and ill-minded.

And you think that all people on the dole are lazy fat people, and not formerly hard working people who were made redundant? Jesus Christ, I hope you're trolling man.

That's unfair stereotyping I think. I'm 17 and I eat rather healthily, "junk" in moderation. I still play football with my friends and when I quit my football team I started going to the gym.

That's not to say theres not truth there though. A lot of 1st/2nd years in my school act like that and I think that it's getting progressively worse.

Suit yourself, but it's also the reason you have people who eat lots of junk, and come out with no weight gain. It's an over-production of the thyroxin hormone, basically. (To an extent)

OP, I don't hang around classrooms, but from what I see generally, fatness among kids is still pretty uncommon.
The 'fat' gene you're talking so loosely about is a glandular disorder, an over production of growth hormones and underproduction of thyroxin which essentially gives a low metabolism, meaning less digestion.
How common is that though? Most of the time it's simply surplus calories being consumed, deficit being burned.

I pay taxes - fat people don't affect me. That's just a commonly used code for "I want to bitch about fat people and I need some piss-poor reason - taxes, that'll do."
Haven't heard of fatness causing unemployment either.
How the FECK CAN THEY AFFORD TO BE FAT IN THIS DAY AND AGE?
High-cal food can be cheap. In the Buenos Aires slums there is a serious obesity crisis. In poor, rural parts of the deep south of America, ditto.

It's a serious public health issue no doubt, but being arseholey to fat people won't help.

Oh I agree 100%, but the environment has changed and environment can cause changes in gene expression. A set of twins, separated at birth, same DNA, essentially clones. One sent to live with San bushmen in the Kalahari, the other sent to live with Joe and Jane taxpayer in Littletown, Square State, USA. One fed off the land, the other fed off Marios Chew & Chuck all you can eat for five dollars. The latter is way more likely to be a fatty. Basically if one is unaware of such cause and effect and is running on instinct, then it's very easy to get trapped by it.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

You'd say it was about the same?

Kids/people are obese because they are eating more calories than they burn off.

i.e. Too much food and too little exercise. It's not rocket science.

I've no idea what your last paragraph is shíting on about tbh.

Not common, I know. But at the same time, there's enough people who have it that you shouldn't group all obese people as 'lazy fatasses'.

Last paragraph was aimed at the OP, sorry.
But yeah, I agree. 99% of obese kids are obese from their environments, because of the upbringing of parents, etc. But there are that 1% of people who have a disorder that they can't control who I'm sure would not like to be seen as lazy fatasses who do nothing.

Yep,I was disparaging of the fat gene as it is used to often.

I am a skinny git with a supposedly high metabolism.Would you like to compare my issues with a fat person who consumes more than their daily ?On average do fat people eat 5 portions a day and zero fat?Do fat people just happen to be the way they are due to gene issues?

If they do then I consider myself corrected.

Fat people,in general, are fat because they eat fatty food and dont exercise. And yes, maybe they need a kick up the hoop and for the rest of the country to accept that it is not bloody ok to be fat.HOW MANY FAT PEOPLE WERE THERE DURING THE WAR/FAMINE/CONCENTRATION CAMPS?
I am not being facetious here.It is mainly a lifestyle choice with a few wee fatties who will always be so due to their gene anomaly

I may have made a mistake in naming ADHD in that equation.

Hyper kids are not necessarily nutty.I was a cheeky wee rascal as a kid but parents are doping kids with this American "disease"for convenience.

I used to be a little fatty in school, was because I stuffed my face with sweets and didn't exercise. Started cycling to school, and playing a sport and eating less, its not hard for kids to lose weight.

This sh!te about kids growing out of it is just that, sh!te, if I hadn't changed my ways(luckily I had the foresight to do it myself, mother was convinced I would grow out of it) I would still be 6'1" or so but I would be a right fat bastard rather than a pretty healthy 75 Kg or so.

Fat kids and their parents need to cop the fcuk on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,762 ✭✭✭jive

In fairness it's not the kids fault. Children don't know any better and for the most part just eat what they are given with the occasional trip to the shop to get a can of coke or whatever which isn't going to make you obese. The blame must lay entirely on the parents. The parents feed their children. In general fat parents will have fat children because they live on the same ****ty diet, not due to some gene that fat people like to console themselves with.

I wonder why that gene hasn't spread anywhere outside of the western world even with international travel. Probably due to the fact that to become fat you have to eat in a caloric surplus; your genes won't make you fat, your diet will. With the exception of very rare syndromes the diet / excercise regime (or lack of) is solely to blame. If anyone thinks otherwise they are delusional.

    Exactly.

I go home for lunch every day and always see secondary school kids having lunch in Four Star Pizza, Kebab Klub and Hillbilly's (if you know Fairview then you'd know these spots). That can't be healthy, I certainly didn't do it as a kid.

I found healthy food to be quite expensive in Ireland. When I lived in Spain, cheap produce and high-quality meat were very cheap and readily available; I was surprised at how much more expensive Ireland was, and I had to go out of my way to buy cheap produce. Bread, sweets, soda, crisps and frozen processed meals were readily available and cheap though.
