my brothers car (1.6 subru impretza) was over heating and he brought it to a mechanic, and after looking at the car they sent radiator away for testing,

    my question is

is this not somthing they can do on the spot instead of sending away and costing a pretty penny

    No.

Do you ever ask the doctor why he can't test your p1ss sample without sending it away.

What's a "subru impretza"? Is it a cheap chinese version of Subaru Impreza?? :)

Of course they can , just as you can buy cheap software to diagnose faults in a car. But the garage wont tell you that and will charge up to €80 for a diagnosis on their machine.

Or you could just buy a haynes manual and do loads of googling and become an overnight expert on all things mechanical. Then you would never have to go to a mechanic ever again. And if you do need to go for some reason, you'll be able to tell the mechanic what to fix, how to fix it, and how much it will cost. After all, why bother listening to someone who works in the trade everyday, is qualified, knows many of the common faults with particular models, and knows whats best (in most cases) for your car.

Surely it's time for a sub forum titled "I don't trust mechanics and want to start second guessing everything they do"

Why not also buy your own cow, then you wouldn't have to pay the farmer, processor, distributor, and retailer for milk in a carton.

Well there certainly would be plenty of material for a ' I've been ripped off by a mechanic' forum.

Thats the reason why i fix my cars myself :) and if something go wrong, i can just blame myself, and spend extra hours in internet and softwares to find solution.

Overheating would cause number problems. Radiator needs test if coolant getting missing... but it would be obvious if radiator leaking.... spot yourself puddle under car. that would be last thing to do - send radiator for test... and even i wouldnt bother test, buy new radiator... would be cheaper then testing (shop around in internet .. even ebay). .. but as i said, it would be last thing.

Overheating would cause faulty thermostat.. not opening when car heat up, coolant sensor, or broken water pump.

hope you wont be ripped off.

Any decent garage/mechanic will be able pressure test the cooling system on site, which, of course, includes the radiator.

Supposedly sending the rad away sounds like someone trying to make the fact that they don't have the proper diagnostic equipment sound like a big job you(or your brother) will have to pay for.

To me that would seem to be the most logical approach or at least first step assuming there are no immediately apparent visible leaks, which would be fixed first and then a pressure test done if car is still loosing coolant. One would need to question why they sent the rad alone off to be pressure tested unless I'm missing something.

OP, you are getting some very hostile and sarky comments here I must say. In fairness if you were building an extension and you thought the builder was incompetent in an aspect of his work or indeed pulling a fast one you might go onto the planning and construction forum and throw out the question, doesn't necessairly mean you should build the extension yourself or become an overnight expert....Thats what such forums are here for I would have thought?

Thanks guys for your comments.. well most of you anyway

His car seems to be fixed now as it was a blockage in the radiator.

It appears the people who had the car before him put something into the radiator to block a hole, and what happened was it sealed half of the radiator and caused an part of the radiator to be blocked from the rest, like an air pocket and was causing car to overheat.

    Refurbished the radiator and labour

Least he's car is running alrite, hopefully he'll be trouble free for a good while.

If any more Subaru related problems the lads on www.isdc.ie
should be able to help out. Great for tips, second hand parts and low prices from the traders there too.

550 way overpriced. ebay stuff would be cheaper. id say, you could get new rad for 120 delivered.

They should be able to do a Pressure test inhouse but a Flow test would require more expensive equipment that only a radiator specialist would have.
They have obviously checked the water pump and the coolant flow through the engine and now need to check what the flow is like through the rad. It could be pretty much blocked up.
