Query about provisional licence

My brother got a provisional licence in 2005. He then went to America to work in 2006 and has just returned this month.

He now wants to get a provisional/learner permit again. Does he need to go through the whole process again (theory test etc.) or can he renew the licence he got in 05?

I think the limit is 5 years, I would say he needs to apply for the learner permit again

I thought that would be the case, worth a try. Thanks.

If he got the provisional in 2005 it expired in 2007, so they're OK as it only expired 4 years ago.

Call the RSA on Monday with his drivers licence number and they'll let him know exactly.

We checked today and he actually got the licence in October 2004. Based on the information on this thread he should be OK but he will call on Monday to clarify.

    Thanks all.

He got the learner permit this week. Only took two days to get sent out as well which I thought was pretty efficient.

Hi, my provisional license expired 2007 as well? Does that mean I wont have to resit the theory?

Where do I get the forms to reapply? Does it take long. Defo going to sit my test this summer. Do the new rules apply for me as in terms of amount of hours I have to get lessons for?

    Thanks!!

    Hi

No you'll be fine. Once your provisional expired within the last 5 years, you do not need to resit the theory test.

Just go into your local motor tax office with your expired provisional, fill out the renewal form, give them the fee and two signed passport photos and they'll send a new one to you which will be valid for 2 years.

If it's your third or more provisional, you will also need evidence that you have booked a driving test, such as a letter/email. In this case, the licence will only be valid for a year in order to allow you to sit your test.

The new rules for number of lessons will not apply to you. They only apply to those getting their first learner permit.

    Hope this helps

    Matt

I'm afraid you'll have to go to the tax office in wicklow as your permit is issued by the co council, in your case, Wicklow.

Pain in the backside I know!

Can I apply via post or do I have to turn up in person?

Post is no probs. Just expect an increased turnaround time and make sure you include everything required to process the renewal, other wise it will hold things up. Make sure ya don't send cash in the post either:)

    Hope ya get sorted:)

Thanks for all the help, actually one final question, do I need a Garda to sign and stamp my passport photos for a license renewal?

Na, the only time you need to get the guards to stamp or sign anything is in the case of a lost/stolen licence. Just make sure you sign the back is all.

This is great. From reading their website I was convinced I'd have to re-sit the exam, eye test and all. God bless Boards.ie

Anyway I went in to see about getting my second provisional least week. The woman behind the counter says "this is your second licence already." Cue indignation. "I think not", says I. "I think I would remember having had a licence before this one." To give her her due she didn't smirk or even raise an eyebrow as she turned the computer screen around to display evidence of my first licence being in 2002. So I mumbled a bit and beat a hasty retreat. One email off to the old driving test people to book a test date (cost €85) and a return to the motor tax office and my third provisional is in the post.
