No, they won't. Passport or no travel when it comes to Ryanair

You should probably ring ryanair and ask them. A lot of countries say you have to have at least 6 months left on your passport, and although the Spanish don't require you to have a passport if you get someone on a bad day in the airport they could wreck his holiday.

In fairness he should have known the ryanair rules, if you stick to them, there would be no problems whatsoever

That's fine. Once it's valid when he's returning, there's no problem. The 6 month rule doesn't apply to EU nationals travelling within the EU.

Are you sure this is the case?

I was travelling to Bulgaria last summer and was told I needed at least 6 months from the time I was returning?

As far as I know there are different rules when it comes to the more recently joined EU countries like Bulgaria and Poland, I'd imagine Spain should be fine, you should prob ring Ryanair though for peace of mind anyways

I've travelled on my passport well into the last 6 months (all EU, might be different if you're going somewhere else). But why focus on the fact that Ryanair insist on passport anyway. Ireland isn't in Schengen, you would need your passport no matter what airline you were flying with. I don't know if the Spanish embassy were confused or I am, is that not the case?

Someone gave you wrong information. If you do a search here in the travel forum, you will be surprised how often that "do I need six months extra validity" question comes up - and how often people answer it incorrectly.

The rules are plain and simple: Any EU citizen is free to travel within the EU using either their passport or national ID card up until the day it expires. EU countries are explicitly prohibited from imposing any additional ID requirements. Thus, the tip you will often see posted here to "ring the embassy" or "ring the airline" is nonsense. There is no possibility of any additional ID restrictions, so there is no need to check for each individual county.

It gets more complicated when you travel outside the EU or when you do not hold an EU citizenship. But for EU citizens within the EU, the rules could not be simpler.

    Resurrecting this slightly

Mate of mine is due to travel at the weekend to the UK on Ryanair. However have just remembered that the passports are in a foreign embassy awaiting a visa for another trip. Have been told, by the embassy, they will not get the passports back until the visa is ready which is after this weekend.

I guess they cant travel but anyone got any other suggestions?

Ferry or another airline are his only options. Ryanair's rule is simple but strict: No passport - no travel. Whether he would have been going far away, to the UK or just from Kerry to Dublin does not matter.

Yeah thought as much but worth a check

Dont ryanair, as do other airlines require you to submit your passport details before you fly when going to Spain (and other countries). These details then need to match those on the Passport in your possesion when you go to the airport.

This is in addition to the no passport no fly rule.

Yes they do but they know their passport numbers so thats not the issue. They dont physically have their passports. They are trying to get them but have been told they wont unless they cancel the visa app and then apply again when they get back from the UK - which they cant do as it takes ages to get the visa.
