Working in a top 4 in the Isle of Man?

    Hi all,

Just finished my Accounting Masters and been having some trouble picking up a position on a Grad programme to work towards becoming qualified.

In the last Milkround (2010) I think I applied for twelve firms in total. I only got one interview, at EY, and got rejected at the partner interview. I thought the lack of interviews was pretty surprising, given that I have full CAP1, a solid 2.1 degree, and was midway through a Masters.

Anyway, I saw a position open for a top 4 firm in the Isle of Man a few weeks back, decided to apply, and got called for interview. Interview went really well, and I got put through to the second round straight away. At the second round everything was very positive again and an offer was made to go and work over there for 3 years.

Only thing is, the IOM would never have been my first, or even second or third option in all honesty. I'm worried now though that if I do let this job go and I wait for the Milkrounds in Dublin, I'll face repeated widescale rejection again!

I'm pretty sure CAP2 is in the bag with the Msc done, and fingers crossed another solid 2.1. My only real downside now is a pretty poor LC (which is what I blame the lack of interviews on).

What do people think? Should I have better luck in the milkrounds in october with a masters? or will it be the same story again?

and also, anyone know much about the isle of man? is it a decent place to live for a few yrs for a young 20-something? I'm worried that if I become qualified in the UK, that I'll be caught between a rock and a hard place, with little prospect of returning home to work after that!

Holidayed there a few times, I'd give it a shot if I was you.

You can always try and get a transfer back after a couple of years anyway.

I doubt that a pretty poor leaving cert would be the main reason you didnt get many interviews. If it was sufficient to get you into the course and you got a 2.1 out of the course and entry to a masters as a result, it wouldnt make much sense for potential employers to be shaking their head over the leaving.

A Chartered Accounting qualification is recognised in many countries worldwide and there'd be no harm done to job prospects in Ireland.

Risk versus reward. Do you really want to risk not getting a job in the next milk rounds for what will effectively only affect your location? Plus I'm not positive but doesn't employment from the milk rounds usually begin the following September? You'd be missing out on a year of relevant experience towards full qualification.
