Will my summer job affect my grant?

I am a bit panicked as I just realised that perhaps my summer job might affect me getting my grant for college next year. I can't find information anywhere, does summer work count towards the income or is there an allowance made for summer work? If it does affect my grant how many hours would I have to be doing for it to affect it?

    Thank you

Also, it's not a super high paying job, I am working in kitchens for minimum wage.

Your allowed earn upto €3,809 in a part-time job that wont be considered in your application, and besides as far as i know your earnings for 2011 wont be considered for your grant until your returning to college in september 2012, so whatever you earned in 2010 will be considered for this years grant

It's still the same and must be earned outside term time.

    See the studentfinance.ie website:

    http://www.studentfinance.ie/downloads/1339418623/Student_Grant_Scheme_2012.pdf

    Holiday Earnings:
An allowance of €3,809, in respect of income earned in the reference period but
outside of the approved institution’s term time, is deductible from the applicant’s earnings.

Are wages from part time work during the semester still taken into account so?

Yes. Just so everyone is aware, you will be asked for copies of all payslips for the year to show what you earned outside of term time (or prove you only earned outside of term time). If you don't have them SUSI will tell you to ring up your job & ask them to send you out copies.

So any income earned during term time would be taken into account regardless of how much?

Yes. They allow you 12 weeks in the Summer (June, July, August), 2 weeks at Christmas, 1 week at Easter. You can earn up to €3,809 during those times & it will not be considered. Anything above that during those times will be considered & anything outside of those times will be considered.

What If you get a summer job during the summer of 5th or 6th year? Is the €3809 still not considered or....?

I dont think welfare will give you enough to be over the limit anyway.

well i am dependent on parents so the social welfare i got plus their income just puts me over the limit buy a few hundred , i would have been better off if i didnt get social welfare for the summer as the amount i got is less then the grant i would have got if i didnt :/

Surely that's a change is circumstances, as you no longer receive the social welfare, so they should disregard your dole payments for last year as you no longer device it while in college? I would of thought so?

ya thats what i thought , so i rang and asked ages ago and the said it would not count as a change of circumstances , i then emailed and asked and they said to send on a letter from social welfare saying i was no longer getting social welfare , but never said if it would count or not. so im just waiting to hear back from them and thinking about appealing if i dont get it . just wish i knew what was happening. thanks for getting back to me anyway :)

Does this 'termtime' include time during secondary school ie do summer jobs in fifth or sixth year count towards your grant since your not technically in college yet?

I think it does but maybe ring susi helpdesk to ask

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.
